Job Description

Expected hours of work per week: 1020 hours

Work Location & Hours: Biology Commons (Mills 240 and surrounding biology labs

Qualifications for Position:

  • Undergraduate student (sophomore or higher standing)
  • Biology Major.
  • GPA in biology classes >3.5
  • 1020 hours of availability mostly during the day but some tutoring hours in the evening; individual student schedules vary but may include times from 7:30am through 10pm.

Expected Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Tutoring
  • Teaching lab setup teardown and routine cleaning and organization
  • Assessing and helping to manage lab and office supply inventory
  • Tidying of Biology Commons area
  • Glassware washing
  • Grading
  • Miscellaneous office tasks relating to ongoing departmental operations

Resume skills development (NACE Competencies required by employers)

    • Developing handson experience in laboratory procedures equipment operation and laboratoryrelated problemsolving.
    • Gaining exposure to biological research methods instructional techniques and academic support.
    • Cultivating mentorship relationships with faculty and engaging in professional development opportunities.

    • Explaining biological concepts to peers during tutoring sessions.
    • Interacting professionally with students faculty and staff to facilitate lab operations.
    • Documenting lab preparations and inventory for efficient department function.

    • Troubleshooting lab setup issues.
    • Evaluating student questions during tutoring and guiding them toward understanding concepts.
    • Applying problemsolving skills to ensure smooth laboratory operations.

    • Training new workstudy students on laboratory setup and procedures.
    • Taking initiative in organizing and maintaining lab facilities.

    • Assisting in departmental events such as science outreach or student recruitment

    • Using laboratory equipment such as microscopes spectrophotometers and centrifuges.
    • Managing learning platforms (Canvas) for tutoring and assignment grading support.

Work Environment

The work associated job will mostly take place in the Biology Commons area and in the adjacent biology labs on the 2nd floor of Mills

Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately loudly or quickly
