The Vehicle Maintenance Division of King County Metro Transit is excited to offer a unique development opportunity for eligible King County employees! The Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent Development Program provides multiple 6month Special Duty Assignments (SDAs) designed to help aspiring leaders develop critical skills and knowledge in the Vehicle Maintenance (VM) field.

This program empowers participants to enhance leadership management planning and strategic thinking abilities equipping them with the skills needed to contribute to the longterm success of Vehicle Maintenance operations. Additionally it offers a unique opportunity to gain specific job knowledge technical expertise and practical skills relevant to Superintendent responsibilities such as:

Development Program Overview:This 6month program will guide participants in learning about all areas of Vehicle Maintenance and the Superintendent role with learning modules organized as follows:
  • 1 week of indepth orientation over VM sections workgroups internal resources and organizational structures that support the VM division as a whole
  • 4 weeks will be spent paired with a VM Superintendent advisor to comanage two bases while receivingguidance throughadditionallearning projects tasks and topics
  • Another4weekrotation will be spent paired with a VM Superintendent advisor to comanagea different setof two bases while receivingguidance throughadditionallearning projectstasksand topics
  • The remaining weeks are spent overseeing one assigned base as the Acting Superintendent with regular checkins and support from an advising Superintendent
Recruitment Details: This recruitment will be used to fill at least five 5 SDA positions lasting 6 months (with the possibility of extension). Multiple SDAs will begin immediately after the recruitment ends with additional SDAs beginning 6 months later. This recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future Superintendent SDA Development Program vacancies as they become available within 12 months from the establishment of the list.

Job Duties

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Drivers License (Washington license by date of hire) or the ability to travel throughout the county in a timely fashion
  • Must be willing to work nonstandard hours (as needed) to effectively support and connect with employees on all shifts
  • Must be willing to be on call and participate in oncall rotations.
  • Work requires reporting for duty and directing vehicle maintenance operations during adverse weather events and other emergencies
Desirable qualifications include (but are not required):
  • Proven ability to oversee people and projects in operational settings delivering results through effective planning and delegation especially with stateofgoodrepair projects and/or vehicle maintenance operations
  • Knowledge of operational financial and cost analyses including accounting principles auditing standards and regulations governing funding procurement contracting and inventory operations particularly in mass transit
  • Experience in highly unionized vehicle maintenance environments with expertise in related safety principles and applicable federal state and local laws including labor contract agreements.
  • Knowledge of employment laws labor relations practices grievance and arbitration processes and collaborative or interestbased negotiation techniques
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution problemsolving and negotiation demonstrating success in fostering collaboration equity and mutual respect with diverse individuals and groups
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and practices or experience leading process improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency
  • Passion for/ skill in developing team members in pursuit of their personal and professional goals
  • Commitment to King County Metros mission to enhance mobility equity and sustainability aligning maintenance operations with these values
  • Skilled in using automated maintenance management systems and proficient with business applications such as Power BI and Microsoft Office Suite

Supplemental Information

Selection process:Applications will be screened for clarity thoroughness competitiveness and written communication skills. Initial screening will be based on a review of the required application materials mentioned above. The employment history detailed in your application must validate and support your responses within the supplemental questions section and cover letter. If your experience and responses cannot be validated you will not proceed to the next steps of the review/selection process. The most competitive candidates may be invited to interview. SDA forms will be signed for selected candidates after successful completion of any/all preemployment process screening steps such as a drivers abstract review and a King County Personnel Record Review. Record Reviews will evaluate any documented disciplinary action performance evaluations and attendance issues on file for the previous two years. Performance evaluations must reflect scores of 3 or higher in all categories.
