Youll gain valuable experience operating equipment maintaining infrastructure like fencing and pastures and performing general groundskeeping duties.
Beyond facility care youll also play a key role in preparing animal science labs supporting faculty and mentoring students. Key Responsibilities:
Ensure Consistent and Comprehensive Animal and Facility Care
- Provide daily care for livestock including feeding watering cleaning and monitoring animal health.
- Identify signs of illness or injury and coordinate timely veterinary care.
- Maintain clean safe and biosecure environments for all animals including pens and pastures.
- Monitor animal and pasture health and apply appropriate treatment actions.
- Participate in rotational weekend care and support horticulture staff in acquiring basic animal care skills.
- Maintain accurate records of feeding health and facility maintenance activities.
Operate and Maintain Equipment Infrastructure and Supplies
- Use hand tools and farm equipment to support daily operations including transporting feed and materials.
- Build repair and maintain fencing systems including electric fencing.
- Perform general groundskeeping and assist with pesticide herbicide and fungicide application.
- Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on lab equipment.
- Manage inventory of animal care and lab supplies ensuring availability and compliance with safety protocols.
- Properly dispose of hazardous chemicals and promptly report safety concerns.
Support Laboratory Instruction and Student Development
- Prepare materials specimens and equipment for animal science labs; ensure accurate lab setup and takedown.
- Maintain clean and organized lab spaces including washing tools and glassware.
- Mentor and help train student employees in animal husbandry lab procedures and facility operations.
- Collaborate with faculty to support student learning and ensure safe effective lab and facility practices.
- Guide students in following best practices and promote a safe handson learning environment.
What Were Looking For:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two 2 years of experience in animal husbandry facilities maintenance and pasture management or an associates degree (AAS) in a related field
- Valid drivers license
- Willingness to gain applicable licensing (e.g. pesticide/herbicide application)
- Flexibility and adaptability in developing an educational environment.
- Familiarity with equipment repair and preventative maintenance.
- Knowledge of animal handling and welfare standards.
- Ability to work weekends and outside standard hours as needed.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of animal anatomy physiology and nutrition.
- Ability to identify common animal breeds and assess animal behavior.
Working Conditions Physical Demands:
- Exposure to livestock animal waste cleaning agents and chemical substances.
- Noise levels may vary frequent lifting (up to 50 lbs. and outside work
