Job Description

American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher .67 FTE Riverside High School

The start date for this position isAugust 19 2025 for theschool year.

Riverside High School:

Riverside is the newest comprehensive high school in the West LinnWilsonville School District. One unique aspect of Riverside is that we are a school of choice for all students within the district. We will open as an International Baccalaureate high school that will focus on creating meaningful educational experiences for students.

Overview of the Position:

The American Sign Language teacher is responsible for providing instruction in American Sign Language. This position is for .67 FTE. This position will develop and implement curriculum in vocabulary and linguistic structures of ASL as well as the cultural perspectives of the Deaf Community. Provide instruction in receptive and expressive process of ASL.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Select and develop appropriate curriculum for the instruction of ASL.
  • Select and develop assessments which would evaluate student competence in expressive and receptive aspects of ASL.
  • Prepare and maintain related documents indicating student progress.
  • Write lesson plans that are aligned with objectives and goals of curriculum and ASL Content Standards
  • Assess student progress regularly keeping accurate records and providing progress reports as required and communicating with parents as deemed necessary
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest level of the students; develop rules of classroom behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner
  • Differentiate curriculum to meet the individual learning needs and interests of students with a wide range of performance levels
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques to meet the learning needs of a diverse group of learners
  • Support special educator in the development of IEP goals for each student that addresses their needs comprehensively
  • Use appropriate strategies materials and other available resources that will assist the student to achieve instructional goals and objectives and also behavioral goals addressed in the IEP Develop and maintain effective communication with team members parents colleagues and administrators
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and building/department trainings
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Oregon teaching license with an endorsement in any area AND competency in ASLdemonstrated by documentation of ONE of the following:

  • Hold an American Sign Language Teacher Association (ASLTA) Provisional Qualified or Professional Certification AND Provide evidence of American Sign Language Proficiency Interview rating of 3 or better; or an ASLPI rating of Advanced Plus.
  • Complete a Bachelors degree or equivalent in teaching American Sign Language or equivalent preparation that meets the competency standards.
  • Complete a Commissionapproved program for American Sign Language specialization or equivalent preparation


Prior teaching/mentoring experience preferred.
