JOB GOAL: Profile of a Natick Educator

The Middle School Assistant Principal reports to the Middle School Principal. Primary responsibilities are student discipline and attendance and assisting the principal in the areas of student staff community and school leadership. Assumes leadership of the school in the absence of the Principal when directed by Principal or Superintendent.

Works with district and school leadership to combat systemic barriers that limit student family and staff members equitable access to opportunity.

  • Identifies and addresses bias and its impact on rigor and opportunity for students and staff
  • Updates policies and equitable access procedures

Student Leadership

  • Coordinates efforts with the Principal teacher leaders teachers guidance counselors parents and other school community staff to effect improvement of inappropriate student behavior.
  • Provides centralized supervision and control of student disciplinary matters and student attendance.
  • Supervises on a shared basis with other staff student behavior at afterschool activities of the school.
  • Mediates studentstaffparent conflicts.

Staff Leadership

  • Advises staff members of effective student management techniques.
  • In conjunction with guidance staff alerts staff members to unusual family or personal circumstances that may affect student behavior or performance.
  • Assists in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Provides direction and supervision of homeroom period operations maintains student locator file and supervises student message center operations.
  • Provides supervision and coordination of middle school administrative computer operations including:
    • Development and input of the student information database
    • Input of daily attendance data and publication of daily attendance list
    • Input of quarterly grades and comments
    • Production of quarterly attendance register and yearend attendance summaries
    • Production and distribution of quarterly grade reports
    • Maintenance of student discipline records and production of related reports.
  • Works with principal to complete student scheduling process.
  • Evaluates faculty as directed by the Principal.
  • Attends middle school leadership meetings as needed.
  • Supervises main office staff.

Community Leadership

  • Maintains close liaison and working relationships with community youth activities police court officials and other supporting agencies.
  • Keeps parents informed in writing and by telephone of unsatisfactory discipline and attendance.

School Leadership

  • Develops methods to correct unsatisfactory patterns of attendance.
  • Works with administrators faculty and students in the development of standards of behavior and school rules and regulations.
  • Maintains current library of state and federal school law and relevant legislation bearing on the operation of public schools as well as precedent setting case law decisions especially as they pertain to attendance discipline and liability issues.
  • Assists the principal in the coordination of staff homeroom assignments and the delineation of staff responsibilities for attendance report cards and study halls.
  • Participates in special education evaluations and SST meetings.
  • Initiates legal actions in matters of attendance and enforcement of relevant laws; refers acts of criminal offense to law enforcement agencies and coordinates same with local fire and police departments.
  • Prepares procedures for emergency drills and evacuations.

Other duties as assigned by the Principal or the Superintendent.

  • move about the classroom school school grounds office and/or offsite locations.
    • On some occasions it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces;

  • operate a computer and other school/office productivity machinery (i.e. iPad copy machine computer printer assistive technology etc.;
  • read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed matter with or without visual aids;
  • position oneself to maintain files and access school/classroom/office materials;
  • communicate with others so that information received and given is understood and accurately communicated;
  • communicate and collaborate effectively with students parents and other staff members in person via video conference on the telephone and/or in writing;
  • observe details at close range
  • in the school setting ensure the safety of students;
  • multitask and meet multiple demands from several people;
  • may need to teach and support students with life skills development such as eating cleaning and toileting
  • lifting up to and including 25 lbs
  • the noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
