Job Description:

The University of Florida College of Medicine is seeking a strategic experienced HR leader to serve as Director of Human Resources. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer for the College of Medicine this highimpact role oversees HR operations for one of the universitys most complex academic and clinical environments supporting over 5000 employees across education research and patient care. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge of academic medicine proven success leading HR strategy in a matrixed organization and the ability to build trusted partnerships with senior leadership and health system stakeholders.

The University of Florida College of Medicine (COM) is seeking a forwardthinking relationshipdriven HR leader to serve as its next Director of Human Resources. This is a highly visible highimpact role one that requires more than just HR expertise. It demands someone who understands the complexity of academic medicine appreciates the nuance of faculty and healthcare operations and is ready to lead with strategy credibility and purpose.

With over 5000 employees and a $1.5B operating budget COM is one of the most complex and dynamic environments at UF. The Director will oversee HR operations for the college serve as a key advisor to senior leadership and drive efforts that enhance workforce planning operational efficiency and organizational culture.

To succeed in this role the Director must be able to navigate and build strong partnerships across a highly matrixed academic health system including with department chairs hospital leadership the Provosts Office and legal counsel. They will be expected to translate institutional goals into people strategies that support faculty staff residents and graduate assistants across the clinical research and education missions. Leading a highperforming HR team the Director will also be responsible for advancing new models for service delivery compliance and strategic collaboration. This role requires deep expertise in areas ranging from policy development to employee relations to strategic workforce planning and the discernment to know when to zoom in on the details or zoom out to see the broader picture.

About This Role

Strategic Leadership & HR Operations

  • Guide senior leadership department chairs department administrators highlevel departmental leaders and college leadership on HR strategy policy development and workforce planning to align HR initiatives with institutional goals.
  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for HR operations within COM ensuring alignment with university policies operational efficiency HR initiatives and best practices.
  • Oversee staffing and workforce development for the COM HR team and advise department leaders on HR staffing strategies while streamlining HR processes to improve operations and enhance employee experience.
  • Support COM HRs engagement with national HR trends and current best practices including collaboration with AAMC and similar organizations.
  • Supervise the Associate Director and collaborate regularly with the COM HR management team to support effective performance management and professional development across the HR team.
  • Lead strategic communication efforts to ensure clear effective messaging across HR initiatives employee relations and organizational changes.

Policy Development & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards for faculty staff trainees and student employees including but not limited to UF ACGME and GAU.
  • Develop implement and refine HR policies to ensure compliance efficiency and alignment with evolving institutional and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with the health system Graduate Medical Education (GME) and other institutional offices to ensure alignment between HR strategies accreditation standards and workforce planning.

Employee Relations

  • Serve as a senior advisor on complex and highrisk employee relations cases collaborating with the Office of the General Counsel when appropriate to ensure legal compliance and strategic resolution.
  • Provide guidance on conflict resolution investigations and policy interpretation.
  • Partner with key stakeholders to develop proactive employee relations strategies.
  • Advise senior administrators department chairs and department leaders in implementing programs new initiatives and special projects.

Organizational Development & Employee Engagement

  • Lead initiatives to enhance workplace culture professional development and engagement focusing on HRdriven organizational improvements.
  • Champion HRrelated leadership development succession planning and career growth opportunities while proactively exploring and developing new programming that supports future faculty and staff development and broader institutional initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability collaboration operational efficiency and continuous learning within HR functions promoting practical resultsoriented approaches that enhance productivity and effectiveness.
  • Develop and oversee HR engagement initiatives to improve retention workplace satisfaction and a sense of belonging across all teams.

Centers of Expertise (COE) Strategic Guidance

  • Provide strategic leadership in identifying the vision goals and initiatives for HR Centers of Expertise (COEs) with a focus on aligning data business processes and operational strategies with HR priorities.
  • Oversee the implementation of COE initiatives ensuring consistency with institutional objectives and best practices.
  • Collaborate with COE leads and key stakeholders on emerging areas of HR specialization supporting continuous improvement and innovation across HR functions.

Budget Oversight & Resource Allocation

  • Provide highlevel oversight of HRrelated financial resources ensuring fiscal responsibility and strategic allocation of funds.
  • Oversee the management of HR budget planning and resource distribution providing strategic direction to ensure alignment with HR priorities and institutional goals.
  • Ensure HR operations align with budgetary constraints while optimizing service delivery.

This role demands more than HR knowledge it requires sound judgment discretion and the ability to lead within a fastpaced matrixed environment. Success depends on building trust with diverse stakeholders navigating complexity with confidence and maintaining high levels of confidentiality and professionalism. The Director must balance strategic vision with operational precision and be comfortable influencing change at scale.

Masters degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated experience leading and scaling HR teams optimizing workforce alignment and implementing forwardthinking HR strategies within a complex academic or healthcare setting.
  • Proven success leading HR transformation efforts including process redesign organizational restructuring and workforce development in a large matrixed environment.
  • Deep understanding of academic medicine including faculty affairs credentialing licensing and the interconnected operations of clinical research and education missions.
  • Indepth knowledge of HR policies and regulatory frameworks applicable to faculty staff residents and graduate assistant employees including but not limited to University of Florida policy ACGME and GAU requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex employee relations cases advise senior leadership and support proactive strategies that balance risk and organizational culture.
  • Proven ability to build trusted partnerships with senior leaders faculty affairs and integrated health system stakeholders to align HR strategy with enterprisewide goals.
  • Experience overseeing highimpact HR initiatives across the employee lifecycle including recruitment onboarding retention immigration compliance and policy adherence.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence advise and engage stakeholders at all levels across decentralized and missiondriven environments.
  • Proficiency in HR and case management platforms (e.g. Salesforce PeopleSoft) with demonstrated use of data and analytics to support workforce planning and operational decisionmaking.
  • HR certification (SPHR SHRMSCP or equivalent) strongly preferred
