Job Duties

Ensures expectations are clear well communicated and relate to the goals and objectives of the department or unit. Provide staff with frequent constructive feedback including interim evaluations as appropriate. Ensures staff has the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to accomplish goals. Completes performance planning and evaluation systems by established deadlines with proper documentation. Addresses performance issues and documents issues as they occur. Reviews and communicates safety issues to assure a safe and healthy workplace.

Demonstrate leadership and management skills in effective utilization of staff resources. Will have 24hour accountability for assigned unit. Will demonstrate knowledge of all resident needs and conditions on their assigned unit. Holds staff meetings to address issues pertaining to unit and resident care. Communicates changes in policy and procedures and discusses unit concerns with subordinates. Ensures that staff is oriented to unit and are held accountable for quality patient care.
Ensures policies and procedures are followed. Ensures followup is completed daily for issues/concerns on the unit. Attends nursing and other meetings as assigned. May assist in recruitment/selection of personnel. Works closely with Human Resources ensuring compliance with the Commonwealths disciplinary process and grievance procedure in cases where disciplinary action may be necessary.

Conduct compliance rounds and unit/resident inspections daily and as needed. Updates and completes resident census and condition reports and submit to the Director of Nursing weekly. Completes reports for QI and other reports as assigned. Ensures daily midnight census is correct.

Assist in the development of treatment plans and patient teaching programs ensuring maintenance and updating all care plans assessments and discharge summaries are completed in a timely manner as required by policy. Collaborates with other nurses and appropriate staff concerning the clinical status of patients and problems in the delivery of nursing care.
Enforces safety rules and regulations ensuring all incidents are reported and investigated in a timely manner. Initiates or recommends appropriate corrective action necessary to avoid reoccurrence. Maintains a clean and safe environment ensuring orderly work areas throughout the unit are maintained.

May function as the charge nurse shift or weekend supervisor as necessary. Performs other duties that may be assigned that are within the Nursing departments mission and as situations warrant in meeting the overall needs of the facility.

May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Serves in the Nurse oncall rotation.

Minimum Qualifications

Excellent clinical knowledge and skill to assess and develop patient care plans; demonstrated ability to coordinate delegate communicate and problem solve; ability to supervise and evaluate both patient care and staff performance; ability to instruct and train patients and staff. Possess basic knowledge of computer software and have the ability to use the computer.

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing and licensed as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Active licensure is a condition of employment. Must meet all requirements for maintaining license.

Additional Considerations

Previous professional nursing experience in a longterm care or adult geriatric setting desirable; experience in leadership or management preferred. CPR certification required upon hire or willing to obtain.
