Salary/Wage Range: $26.32 $32.37/hour dependent on qualifications

Under direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor the Public Works & Facilities Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light to medium equipment sufficient to maintain City streets rightsofway storm water systems parking lots airport parks public properties cityowned facilities and other related functions as assigned or apparent.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Provides maintenance and upkeep to city property. Maintains the appearance of city streets storm sewers city buildings park grounds picnic areas and trails. Assists in ordering and receiving materials and supplies. Assists in keeping accurate records for the department. Assists in regular maintenance and repair of city facilities park and street equipment.
  • Operates equipment and trucks for construction reconstruction and maintenance of City streets and other public areas. Performs servicing repairs routine and field maintenance on cityowned facilities assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Forms and installs concrete sections.
  • Maintains all city facilities streets parking lots and rightsofway during summer and winter conditions. Lays and patches pavement. Paints streets and marks parking lots.
  • Performs snow and ice removal using heavy and lightduty equipment.
  • Mows turf areas. Applies pesticide and fertilizer to turf areas.
  • Constructs repairs and cleans storm water systems.
  • Installs and maintains traffic signage.
  • Performs a variety of grading shaping digging and loading activities.
  • Plants trims and removes trees and bushes.
  • Performs HVAC and plumbing repairs.
  • Provides technical support services to the city. Provides technical assistance during inclement weather conditions makes emergency repairs as needed and investigates trouble calls. Assists other departments as needed.
  • Performs carpentry duties.
  • Performs physical and mental demands and work environment requirements of this position.
  • Attends regularly scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Effectively and respectfully communicates and interacts with other employees supervisors individuals from other organizations and citizen customers.
  • Performs the physical and mental demands of the position.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned or apparent to achieve the goals and objectives of the Public Works & Facilities Department.

Equipment Used:

This position uses equipment including but not limited to: telephone computer power drills air tools whips power pruners communication radios chop saws chain saws skill saws jig saws band saws hedge trimmers power washers jack hammers sprayers 3pt drags 3pt mowers 2 ton hoists stripers jib cranes floor jacks snow blowers shovels rakes articulating loader backhoe sweeper dump truck riding lawn mower skid loader roller asphalt paver asphalt reclaimer and tractor to perform required functions. This position does require the operation of an automobile.

Requirements

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in materials methods techniques and equipment used in constructing maintaining repairing and cleaning streets sidewalks curbs gutters storm sewers and tree trimming.
  • Knowledge of chain saw usage.
  • Knowledge of noxious weeds tree care horticulture practices pesticides and herbicides.
  • Ability to perform facilities and equipment maintenance functions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to assist other departments in maintenance tasks as assigned in emergency situations or to balance seasonal workloads and schedules.
  • Ability to listen comprehend effectively communicate ideas explanations and recommendations verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Competent experience in operating power tools and repairing equipment.
  • Valid Minnesota Class A Drivers License with Airbrake Endorsement and Tanker or the ability to obtain within six months of the date of employment with the City.
  • Ability to operate front end loader plow truck backhoe and skid loader.
  • Practical and competent experience in snow removal equipment and other pieces of typical Public Works equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in welding carpentry or plumbing.
  • Mechanical training and experience.
  • Possession of a Minnesota NonCommercial Pesticide Applicators License.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess a valid Minnesota drivers license or the ability to obtain within thirty days of employment with the City.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
  • Due to the need for a timely offduty response to emergencies this position is required to live (maintain a principle residence) within a 30minute drive as measured to the corporate city limits of Le Sueur as a condition of employment. The driving time is defined as driving under normal driving conditions and at not greater than posted speeds. Employee must establish this principle residence within one 1 year of appointment.

Work Schedule:

The typical work hours for this position are 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday Thursday and 7:00am to 1:00pm on Friday. Evening weekend and additional hours may be required as assigned and/or needed.


Summer Hours: AprilSeptember MondayThursday 6:30am4:30pm


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

This position requires the employee to work alone with others around others and have contact with the public. This position will work inside outside in confined spaces on uneven ground and underground and be exposed to dust dirt fumes gases chemicals moving objects heat extreme heat cold extreme cold wetness humidity and marked changes in temperature or humidity. Activities that will occur continuously more than 7 hours are: verbal communication concentration time management carrying up to 24 pounds. Activities that occur frequently 4 to 7 hours are: Interpersonal skills sitting; standing; bending/stooping; use of the right foot for repetitive movement; talking; hearing; seeing with far vision depth perception accommodation color vision and field of vision; smelling. This position frequently lifts or moves up to 100 pounds. Activities that occur occasionally 1 to 3 hours are: organizational skills walking; squatting; twisting climbing staircases; reach at shoulder level with the right left and both shoulders at the same time; reaching below shoulder level with the right left and both shoulders at the same time; handling; seeing with near vision. Activities that occur infrequently up to 60 minutes are: problem solving analytical ability creativity crouching; pushing; pulling; climbing heights; reaching above shoulder level with the right left and both shoulders at the same time; fine manipulating; sense of touch; use of both feet at the same time for repetitive movements. This position infrequently lifts or moves up to 175 or more pounds. This position will require the ability to drive an automobile.
