Correctional Unit Supervisor (CUS) Permanent

Olympic Corrections Center (OCC)

Full Time Agency Internal Only

The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Correctional Unit Supervisor at Olympic Corrections Center.

Olympic Corrections Center (OCC) is a 381bed male facility located near the Hoh Rainforest. This facility houses minimum security incarcerated individuals and offers treatment work and vocational programs to help ready incarcerated individuals to transition back into the community. OCC also has outside work crews to serve the community as well as fire crews that work alongside Department of Natural Resource employees.


Whether the work is inside a prison in community corrections or in an administrative office the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all incarcerated individuals can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.

Duties

This position is responsible for supervising offenders staff and daily operations of an incarcerated living unit in accordance with Washington Administrative Code (WACs) DOC policies and facility Operational Memoranda.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Supervise monitor and direct the operations of an incarcerated living unit to include security practices incarcerated individual program assignments sanitation of units and compliance with DOC custody policies and operational memoranda.

  • Direct the security and accountability of incarcerated individuals assigned to the unit.
  • Administer and facilitate the Facility Risk Management Team/Multidisciplinary Facility Risk Management Team in their review and implementation of classification discussion and recommendations for Incarcerated individual programming custody levels and transition planning. Solicit input from all resources to include the Incarcerated individual.
  • Ensure the living unit sanitation level is consistent with expectations that are mandated by local State County and Federal guidelines.
  • Ensure inspections/searches of Incarcerated individuals incarcerated individual property and living unit to include program and other areas of the unit are completed in accordance with established Department policies and procedures.
Plan direct and/or supervise the work of living unit staff which includes Support Staff Counselors Correctional Officers and Correctional Sergeants.
  • Establish and prioritize performance expectations for staff utilizing core correctional practices.
  • Conduct timely employee performance evaluations and ensure proper training is provided.
  • Ensure all persons supervised by this position read and comply with Department policies Operational Memoranda and Post Orders/manuals.

Plan direct and monitor unit programs.
  • Coordinate scheduled activities to enable all Incarcerated individuals the optimum availability for participation.
  • Ensure resource information is made available to incarcerated individuals regarding programs and transitional opportunities.
  • Create and support incentive programs and awards to promote unit morale and positive behavior.
Oversee conduct and/or participate in hearings investigations and meetings.
  • Serve as Facility Duty Officer on a rotational basis.
  • Serve as the Disciplinary Hearing Officer.
  • UA drug testing coordinator.


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED AND
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and three years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience.

OR

  • Satisfactory completion of two years of college 60 semester or 90 quarter credits) and five years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience; AND
  • Two years of experience as a supervisor. (This experience may be gained concurrently with the required experience above).
OR
  • Eight 8 years juvenile or adult corrections experience in treatment custody or community corrections or professional counseling or casework experience; AND
  • Two years of experience as a supervisor. (This experience may be gained concurrently with the required experience above).

Demonstrated ability to:

  • Provide positive leadership in times of stress conflict and unforeseen events.

  • Remain calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include but not limited to volatile threatening or other crisis/emergency situations.

  • Expertly intervene in response to threats.
