Position Overview:
The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice is looking for a highly energetic candidate who is selfmotivated and has the working knowledge of the principles practices and techniques for operations of highpressure coal gas or oilfired boilers and how to regulate them. The incumbent in this position will also be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the HVAC system for their assigned facility. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to manage several functions and/or assigned tasks in the Engineering Department and will possess the ability to work closely with other employees in different bargaining units to maintain the upkeep of the power generating and allied machinery at IYC Lincoln. This position would be an excellent fit for someone with a passion and a strong background in maintenance. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply!
Essential Functions:
- Starts up regulates repairs and shuts down HVAC systems including: Fan systems (fans filter systems and housing) air compressorsdiesel engines and electrical generatorsrefrigeration systems (maintenance and repair of condenser units evaporator coils and all associated auxiliaries) domestic hot water heating systemsLife Safety and building automation systems.
- Ensures that equipment operates safely efficiently and within established limits: conducts regular rounds of mechanical room(s)reads and monitors meters gauges computerized controls and other instruments and detects potential mechanical issues by observing machinery operation.
- Maintains mechanical room log recording: gauge readings utilities consumed maintenance work performed and other relevant data.
- Uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and maintenance checks safety devices addresses building operational needs and identifies and corrects any issues that arise.
- Conducts and records tests of water and adds treatment chemicals as needed.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires knowledge skill and mental development equivalent to completion of eight 8 years elementary school.
- Requires four 4 years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low pressure stationary boilers.
Preferred Qualifications: (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers basic understanding of electrical generating equipment demonstrated by at least two 2 years of experience or relevant coursework.
- Prefers Experience maintaining operational logs or simple records for at least two 2 years.
- Prefers possession Stationary Engineer License.
- Prefers possession EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) 608 CFC Universal Refrigeration License
- Prefers ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate emergency action.
- Prefers the ability to calculate fractions decimals and percentages and to keep simple records.
Conditions of Employment:
- Requires the ability to pass a IDJJ/IDOC background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized by an employee regardless of position held is prohibited.
- This position is considered very heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor 20 CFR 404.1567(e). Very Heavy work involves lifting objects weighing more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing 50 pounds or more.
- Overtime is a condition of employment and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled unscheduled or lastminute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends. This also requires the ability to work in a 24 hour on call capacity.
- Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties requires appropriate valid drivers license.
- Requires ability to walk climb stand squat kneel or bend for long periods of time.
- Requires ability to withstand exposure to loud noise dirt dust fumes and high temperatures.

About the Agency:
The mission of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice (IDJJ) is to build youth skills and strengthen families by promoting community safety and positive youth outcomes. Over 900 staff members from across various departments security programming education mental health and more collaborate with the understanding that youth are physically emotionally and cognitively different from adults. The department provides extensive services to young people through a developmental treatmentfocused model of care that builds youth resiliency engages families and promotes community safety at the five youth facilities it operates across the state. IDJJ serves and houses approximately 150 youth and is responsible for approximately 500 youth on Aftercare in various Illinois communities.
