Job Description

Description of Work

The Medical Lab Technician I position is located at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW) in Raleigh NC. NCCIW is the states primary correctional facility for women. It houses the largest female offender population in the state and serves as the support facility for the states other female offenders. This Institution houses up to 1700 offenders. The Healthcare Facility employs approximately 260 fulltime employees.

The position is primarily responsible for performing phlebotomy and this is a draw station only unit. The Medical Lab Technician I responsibilities are (but not limited to) the following:

  • Utilizes knowledge of basic phlebotomy in the collection of all patient blood samples to include technique selection of specimen tubes based on tests ordered.
  • Handling of specimens in preparation for testing & knowledge of specimen acceptability.
  • Position is also responsible for recollecting or assisting in the collections of blood urine and tissue specimens for analysis using sophisticated lab equipment to look for bacteria parasites and other microorganisms.
  • Accurately labels specimens assists in collecting nonblood specimens and prepares blood & body fluid specimens for analysis.
  • Performs required daily printing of reports for laboratory supervisors review.
  • Responsible for assisting with COVID19 screenings as needed.
  • Responsible for training phlebotomy students as necessary.
  • 2nd shift position 11:00am7:00pm

This is a fulltime position 40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. If that language appears below then you may qualify through EITHER year of education OR years of directly related experience OR a combination of both. See details.


Associates degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management note/preferences: Certified as a medical laboratory technician certified medical assistant or phlebotomist or successful completion of specified education required to test and eligible to become certified within 6 months of employment (mandatory).

They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and wellbeing towards a safe transition from prison improving public health and decreasing recidivism.
