Employment Opportunity: Day Camp Counsellor (Summer Student)

Salary Range: $19.00/ per hour
Employment Term: 12 weeks June 2024 August 2024 (MondayFriday 8:004:00 pm 40 hours per week)
Reports To: Day Camp Supervisor
General Description:
Mikmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for One 1 Day Camp Counsellor. The Day Camp Counsellor will be responsible for providing daily supervision of campers and implementing summer camp program plans as directed by the Supervisor. We are looking for someone who loves working with children and would enthusiastically work to ensure children have the best possible experience in our programs. This position will be focused on providing Indigenous students an opportunity to gain work experience while continuing their education. This is a designated position for students with Indigenous ancestry. Applicants must also be able to provide proof of postsecondary enrolment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Be a caring leader through the summer for all campers
- Actively play camp games with campers
- Maintain a collaborative and positive attitude while working in a team setting
- Communicate effectively and professionally with campers and staff
- Facilitate recreational programs including activities such as games and arts and crafts
- Keep rooms organized and clean
- Participate in activities with the children including swimming
- Provide outstanding customer service and communication with parents and guardians
- Report any program issues supply/material requirements and other concerns to supervisors
- Willing and able to supervise campers in a swimming pool setting
- Ensure a fun safe atmosphere for all campers and staff
- May perform other related duties as required
Qualifications & Experience;
- Must have attended postsecondary from September 2024 to April 2025; and be returning to fulltime studies in the Fall of 2025
- Excellent communicator both spoken and written
- Experience working with children ages 5 to 12 years
- Dependable and consistently works to uphold MNFC ethics and standards
- Certified in Emergency First Aid CPR
