Job Description

Position Title: Senior Accountant Grants & Financial Reporting

Department: Finance Divisional Headquarters

Reports to: Division Finance Director

FSLA Status: FullTime/ 40 hours per week; Exempt

Pay: $70K $75K (DOE)

Job Summary:

Senior Accountant Grants & Financial Reporting main duties are to assist the Division Finance Director (DFD) with managing and analyzing the Alaska Divisions financial performance assist with annual fiscal budget preparation assist with budgets for grants and financial management and reporting associated with grants assist with annual financial statement audits UG audits granting agency audits and internal audits. The Project Accountant is expected to work in cohesion with the with Salvation Army Northwest (NW) Division Finance Department which provides bookkeeping treasury and other accounting services to the Alaska Division to include account reconciliations and monthly variance analysis at unit level. Project Accountant will be expected to follow internal policies and procedures as well as Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) principles for notforprofit accounting.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred.
  • At least three years of prior accounting experience with Accounting or Finance degree or seven years of prior accounting experience without a degree.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principals general accounting practices policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements and general ledger activity.
  • Prior experience with nonprofits fund accounting government grants is preferred.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite and specifically ability to perform general and complex mathematical computations in Excel utilize pivot tables lookups and etc.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally and harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to perform research and solve problems independently.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to complete multiple projects with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting & Audit Support

    • Review general ledger activity monthly to ensure accuracy and completeness.
    • Review complex journal entries and monthly bank and account reconciliations.
    • Follow up on aged Accounts Receivable and Payable balances.
    • Support financial statement Single Audit internal and grantor audits.
    • Identify and implement accounting process improvements.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

    • Assist with annual fiscal budget preparation and financial planning efforts for the Alaska Division.
    • Assist with budget revisions throughout the fiscal year to ensure alignment with organizational goals and to reflect funding updates.

Grant Management & Compliance

    • Assist with the preparation of accurate budgets for new grant applications.
    • Maintain grant documentation in shared Finance folders including executed grant agreements and amendments and various reports.
    • Review grant expenses for allowability and eligibility monthly.
    • Support grant reporting and compliance monitoring in alignment with federal state and contractspecific requirements.
    • Prepare timely fiscal reports for government grants and oversee billing accuracy.
    • Review monthly grant revenues and ensure proper accruals are posted.
    • Reconcile grants receivable and deferred revenue balances monthly.
    • Work closely with grant recipient units on grant closeouts and final fiscal reports.
    • Stay informed on grant regulations and best practices through ongoing training.

Reporting & Analysis

    • Prepare and analyze financial reports for internal stakeholders and funders.
    • Run ad hoc financial reports for internal and external users.
    • Ensure proper GL coding and financial classification across funds and departments.
    • Review DHQ cash deposit for GL coding accuracy.
    • Work in conjunction with NW Finance department assisting AK officers and employees with GL coding inquiries GL detail and other accounting inquiries.
    • Respond GL coding and other accounting inquiries from officers and employees.

Collaboration & CrossTraining

    • Collaborate crossfunctionally to support accurate financial operations.
    • Crosstrain with Divisional Finance Director and Finance Support Clerk to ensure continuity.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a welllighted heated and ventilated office setting. The noise level is generally low.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit walk stand bend stoop climb kneel and twist on an intermittent basis; grasp push pull objects such as files file cabinet drawers and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate proficiently all general office equipment and to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to spend long periods at computer accessing and producing information.
  • Ability to understand and clearly communicate written and verbal information.
  • Ability to work in a deadline driven business environment during regular business hours and occasionally work additionally as needed to accomplish the demands of the position.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle in daylight darkness and during periods of inclement weather.

Softwarerelated Skills: Microsoft Word Excel and Outlook familiarity preferred. Ability to use new software programs with basic training.

Language Skills: Must be able to understand follow and give both written and oral instructions and be comfortable working with diverse individuals in facetoface contact and over the telephone. The employee must be able to use speech and hearing for ordinary and telephone conversation.

Mathematical Skills: Must be able to perform simple calculations (addition subtraction multiplication and division) and apply concepts such as ratios and percentages in practical situations.

Performance Skills: Must be punctual organized selfmotivated flexible and possess a desire to learn and assist those he/she interacts with.

Protect the Mission: Must complete the online course for this area and pass the Background Checks required by The Salvation Army for employment.

Driver Requirements: Must be a licensed driver with acceptable driving history. Must also complete and pass The Salvation Army Driver Safety Course.
