Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. In addition to building maintaining and operating the state highway system WSDOT operates the largest ferry system in the nation manages the worlds longest floating bridge and recently completed the worlds widest tunneling project.
The Washington State Ferry system is an essential part of Washingtons transportation network with more than 1800 employees working together to safely and efficiently carry nearly 24 million passengers a year! There are over 400 sailings each day on 9 ferry routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands including an international route to Sidney British Columbia.
The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Journey Electrician to perform skilled/journeylevel marine electrical work in accordance with Federal State and US Coast Guard (USCG) regulations. This position supports our Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility in its mission to provide preventive maintenance and emergency repair for ferry vessels and terminals. The Journey Electrician will play an essential role in advancing WSFs core values Serve Grow Trust Respect and Navigate.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role you/the Journey Electrician will:
- Troubleshoot and Repair Electrical Issues on Vessels and at Terminals
- Vessel propulsion steering lighting power distribution alarming and monitoring communications surveillance cathodic protection and integrated battery systems
- Use electronic diagnostic tools and read drawings blueprints and technical documents.
- Ability to respond to equipment failures and vessel breakdowns 24/7.
- Insulation resistance testing.
- Fiber optic systems cleaning and fusion splicing.
- Inspection and maintenance of electrical motors.
- Construction of new electrical systems.
- Relay and PLCbased controls on vessels and terminals.
- Diagnostics of PLC PLC controlled systems motors motor controllers advanced electronic equipment and complex control systems.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a Marine Electrician
OR
- JourneyLevel status as a Marine Electrician
OR
- Four 4 years in the marine electrical field.
OR
- Successful completion of an accredited vocational electrical program.
And
- Ability to install troubleshoot and repair AC and DC electrical systems up to 4160VAC and 900VDC systems including vessel propulsion steering lighting power distribution alarming and monitoring communications surveillance cathodic protection and integrated battery systems.
- Possess specialized skills including installing and maintaining fiber optic systems PLCs softwarecontrolled electronics HMIs AC motors and controls AC generators large DC motors motor rebrushing commutator repair testing and generators use of electronic diagnostic tools ability to read drawings blueprints technical documents and advanced knowledge in AC/DC theory with a background in electrical troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of AC/DC theory with a background in electrical troubleshooting.
- Ability to understand comprehend and implement instructions plans blueprints sketches/drawings schematics and technical manuals.
- Ability to think strategically and independently in order to develop and implement solutions within established policies.
- Ability to effectively and appropriately prioritize analyze problemsolve plan and implement tasks as needed related to both daytoday and emergent situations ability to manage time and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team is adaptable and flexible to change and changing priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively and build positive internal and external relationships.
- Ability to move (lift/push/pull/carry) 35lbs on a frequent basis (such as a tool pouch or tools) and as much as 50lbs on a seldom basis (such as batteries or motors).
- Annual fit test which includes the ability to obtain a skintorubber seal.
- Valid Washington State Drivers License.
- Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or the ability to obtain and maintain within 90 days of hire.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Generators (over 200 kw) and controls equipment experience preferred.
- PLC certifications for Siemens Allen Bradley and ABB desired.
- AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software experience preferred.
- Journey level (EL01 Washington State Labor and Industries electrical license required for work on Terminals.
