Job Description

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Campus Modernization the Clinical Construction Sr. Program Manager will oversee and foster collaboration between hospital leadership departments and staff and the design and construction team for the UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Oakland Campus Modernization and New Hospital Building (NHB) project. This role encompasses support from initial planning and design through construction and into the activation phase. The Campus Modernization project in Oakland is a $1.5 billion initiative aimed at modernizing the UCSF Oakland Childrens campus including the NHB Administrative Support Building (ASB) redevelopment of the inpatient campus site and several enabling projects.

This position is a strategic leader who bridges hospital operations senior executive decision makers and design and construction of a new 277k sf hospital addition to an operating childrens hospital campus. This person will engage on a regular basis with executives including CEO CMO CNO VP Support Services and leadership of departments including NICU lab periop Emergency Radiology and support departments.

This position will actively engage in the design for the new hospital and lead the development of new operational plans for each department that will operate in the building upon its completion. This position should have high levels of project management skills experience with clinical operations and the ability to communicate and bridge gaps between front line works and hospital executive leadership.

The Clinical Construction Sr. Program Manager creates effective strategies for organizing assigning tracking analyzing and overseeing projects across multiple work streams. They document each projects scope manage resources to meet deadlines and escalate issues promptly when necessary. The role requires exceptional leadership and organizational skills attention to detail and a strong understanding of stakeholder needs. The manager should be knowledgeable about Lean methodologies stay updated on hospital policies best practices and industry trends and collaborate with regulatory licensure and accreditation offices as well as other departments.

The Clinical Construction Sr. Program Manager effectively handles competing priorities and resource conflicts with minimal supervision staying adept at applying new technologies and concepts to current and future projects. This crucial role demands extensive experience in both clinical and construction settings to build trust act as a liaison between groups and develop solutions and strategies for resolving conflicts between the two areas.

The Clinical Construction Sr. Program Manager will work closely with seniorlevel individuals who do not directly report to them. This role requires the ability to establish consensus and communicate clearly with both hospital leadership and the design and construction team. Strong interpersonal skills are essential including team building consensus building diplomacy persuasiveness negotiation and creating a positive work environment.

The position is based in the East Bay with an office located in Oakland. It is a hybrid role allowing for some remote work but it is expected that the majority of time will be spent onsite at the Oakland office hospital and job sitetypically at least three days a week. The role will also require flexibility to respond to project needs and demands which may necessitate additional inperson presence depending on project phases coordination with hospital staff and collaboration with the design and construction teams.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $190000/yr. $225000/yr. (Annual Rate).

  • Expert knowledge of federal state and local laws and regulations governing planning building design and construction including but not limited to ADA CBC JCAHO OSHPD NFPA and CDPH requirements.
  • Expert understanding of industry practices and / or highly specialized discipline such as ADA clinical operations sustainability mechanical engineering or infrastructure.
  • Expert project management skills to effectively manage highly complex multiphase projects or specialized critical project components within an occupied academic medical center.
  • Expert skill in advising and consulting with senior leaders interdisciplinary stakeholders design professionals and construction contractors.
  • Expert skill in promoting advancing and implementing programs within area of expertise.
  • Expert skill in building maintaining and nurturing strong professional relationships.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills across broad stakeholder levels.


    • License to practice in at least one of the following professions: nursing architecture engineering preferred.
    • Certificate to practice in at least one of the following professions: nursing architecture engineering preferred.
    • Expert financial skills to prepare monitor and manage detailed project budgets evaluate cost estimates and review and approve payment requests.
    • Advanced Microsoft Office and project manager software skills. Working knowledge of CAD drawing programs and architectural design application programs.

    The organization of UCSF Real Estate is focused on the development planning delivery and management of physical space for UCSF.     Health Major Capital Projects manages the implementation and of the BCHOakland capital program and provides project management services to those embarking on capital construction and real estate renovation projects. Staff provide comprehensive project management including programming and design budget development construction administration inspection and movein assistance. Planners designers administrators contractors inspectors and others work together to meet the needs of UCSF and BCHOakland clients.

    The combined UCSF Campus and Health organizations include approximately 198 UCSF and 38 contract personnel; operating/recharge budgets of more than $62.2M per year; current year capital project expenditures of $900M; and oversight and responsibility for > $13.3B longrange capital development
