Job Description

This position is a temporary vacancy covering for a Shipping & Receiving Worker on leave. The position is expected to end when the current Shipping & Receiving Worker returns to work.

Reports to: Distribution Center Manager

Overview:

Founded in 1647 Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57000 students from over 114 different countries nearly 8000 employees and an annual budget of $973 million BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.

Currently BPS has 128 schools utilizing three food service delivery models. Forty six 46 schools have full service kitchens with full time cafeteria managers and subordinate staff. Seventy eight 78 schools are satellite kitchen sites receiving meals from an outside vendor contracted by BPS. .

Department Facts:

  • Mission: offer students safe wholesome nutritious enjoyable meals to fuel academic excellence
  • Meals served: Approximately 23500 breakfasts and 35600 lunches served daily; approximately 8000 afterschool meals served daily; 22000 summer meals
  • BPS utilizes Community Eligibility Provision (CEP); which enables the district to provide free meals to all Boston students

Job Responsibilities:

  • Receive and log all incoming orders and dry goods
    • Operate an electric pallet jack or forklift to transport product
    • Breakdown product into separate pallets; tag pallets for storage
  • Store item in designated cold and dry storage
  • Select and transport bulk items for packing and distribution
  • Load trucks for distribution in accordance with Distribution Center plan
  • Inspect all products to ensure they are meeting guidelines for quality and temperature
  • Track vendor and purchasing dates
    • Delivers food and nonfood items; as needed
    • Maintain sanitation of distribution bins and delivery trucks
  • Consistently maintain product quality and integrity
  • Ensure adherence to food safety and facility safety
  • Perform quality control checks to ensure standards are met
  • Take corrective action as necessary on timely basis and in accordance with Food & Nutrition Services standards communicating inferior products or procedures
  • Able to work in team oriented environment
  • Responsible for the sanitation and maintenance of work storage break areas and trucks
  • Follow all safety and sanitation standards of HACCP OSHA and the City of Boston.
  • Completes all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: high school/GED including basic computer skills
  • Valid Massachusetts drivers license with good record
  • Valid Forklift License/Certification
  • Food Handler Certification
  • English language proficiency (written and verbal)
  • 2 5 years of work experience in warehouse
  • Basic knowledge of shipping and receiving practices
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow directions
  • Ability to calculate basic math
  • Flexible about tasks and able to multitask and maintain high a productivity level
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively and work with a range of fellow workers
  • Physical: Walking standing reaching above shoulder level stooping lifting carrying bending and pivoting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Capable of sitting standing walking for extended periods of time
  • Capable of working full day in refrigerated environment must be able to work in a Multitemp warehouse ranging from subzero to the ambient temperature of the outdoors for the entire shift without restrictions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL License
  • ServSafe Certification (Managers)
  • 5 years of work experience in warehouse
  • Hydraulic lift equipment experience
  • Certified knowledge of shipping and receiving practices
  • Proficiency in inventory software databases and systems
  • Familiarity with modern warehousing practices and methods
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Spanish Language

Terms: (Grade 3 Step 1

City of Boston Residency required

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME

Schedule:12 Month Position

Hours: 6:00 am to 2:00pm*
