Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Under general supervision assist the pharmacist to fill physicians orders select assemble and place medications for inpatient (acute care; hospital) and/or outpatient (ambulatory; retail; home infusion) services. A Registered Pharmacy Technician will be evaluated for advancement to a Certified Pharmacy Technician after knowledge achieved from an approved training program (as applicable to state) and passing national technician certification.

Essential Job Functions

*Assisting the pharmacist in preparation of medications for patients within an inpatient (acute care; hospital) and/or outpatient (ambulatory; retail; home infusion) service area. Functions include accepting new written faxed or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescribers agent; accepting new verbal prescription orders for noncontrolled from a prescriber or a prescribers agent as authorized by state law and responsible pharmacist authorization.

*Entering information into and retrieving information from an electronic health record or prescription processing computer system. Ensuring the accurate charge and credit functions related to medication orders are processed for patient billing.

*Preparing and affixing labels; stocking prescription and retrieving those from inventory locations; counting and pouring into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist; performing nonsterile drug compounding as defined under guidelines published by United States Pharmacopeia as defined in sitespecific training guidelines/program.

*Operating technology used for drug dispensing (Robotics)

*As authorized per state law/regulations (please check state regulations or with manager on rules): Sending or receiving electronic prescriptions between pharmacies accessing the same prescription records in a centralized database or pharmacy computers linked in any other manner. Performing sterile and nonsterile drug compounding and stocking of automated drug cabinets and technician checking of technician work.

*Assisting in the education and precepting of new pharmacy technicians pharmacy students and participation in performance improvement activities.

*Outpatient: Packaging and selling a prescription drug to a patient or patient representative and assisting with insurance claim processing. Stocking of automation in retail pharmacy.

*Assist in maintaining a clean and safe work environment. Other functions as outlined and in accordance with respective State Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations.

Licensing/Certification

*Registration with respective State Board of Pharmacy as a Registered Pharmacy Technician. In Kentucky all technicians must be registered but there is no requirement for certification or completion of a nonemployer training program. (required)

Education

High school diploma GED or foreign school diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma.

OR

Have been employed continuously since before April 8 2009 as a pharmacy technician without a high school diploma GED or foreign school diploma equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma. (required)

Previous experience working in Retail Ambulatory Outpatient Hospital Acute Care or Home Infusion pharmacy (preferred)
