Job Description

Position Summary

The City of Brooklyn Park Minnesotas sixth largest municipality is seeking applicants for an Assessing Intern within the Finance Department. The Assessing Division prides itself in providing accurate impartial and defendable valuations and classifications and performs these duties as directed by state statute the Minnesota Department of Revenue Hennepin County and the City Assessor. We are dedicated to continuous improvement and are open to new ideas and progressive thinking. The intern will learn about the assessment process and gain valuable knowledge about Minnesotas complex property tax system the Twin Cities real estate market and the real estate valuation process and procedures.

This position will be primarily responsible for updating the departments residential property database via onsite inspections building plans interviews with homeowners/ tenants questionnaires thirdparty database and resources and other real estate professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work directly with appraisal staff to learn the assessing process by reviewing and verifying building data for residential properties through onsite inspections questionnaires permits and GIS.
  • Learn to read and work with blueprints legal descriptions appraisals and sketches as well as measuring structures and calculating square feet.
  • Learn to work in a Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) system as well as various computer software programs used in the assessing process.
  • Learn and answer public questions regarding assessment procedures valuations taxes and appeals.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties related to the function of the Assessing Division.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
Undergraduate or graduate level studies in real estate construction architecture financeor related field

Experience
Experience with Microsoft Office applications and programs

Licenses/Certifications
Valid drivers license

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and programs.
  • Thorough research organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to physically work in the field including walking long periods measuring and inspecting properties.
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectations.
  • Embrace and engage in cultural shift toward Continuous Improvement.
  • This is a professional and highly visible public contact position requiring patience and tact.
Desired Qualifications
  • Appraisal/Assessment experience.
  • Completion of courses in real estate valuation or construction.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota assessment laws and practices.
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Laotian or Vietnamese.

Anticipated Hiring Wage:$18.00$20.00 Hourly depending on qualifications
Anticipated Work Schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. fulltime nonexempt nonunion temporary internship assignment to include a standard 8hour day for approximately three to four months.
Anticipated Starting Date:Flexible starting and ending dates available May through August.
