Job Description

POSITION: SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST

DEPARTMENT: SURGERY

FLSA STATUS: NONEXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for maintaining a sterile field and assisting surgeons during operative procedures. Responsible for preparing surgical instruments ensuring operating room cleanliness and supporting patients safety throughout preoperative intraoperative and postoperative phases.

JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsible to the Surgery Director
Positions Directly Supervised: None
Regular Contact with all Hospital departments Physicians and the public.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Prepare the operating room for surgery by setting up surgical instruments equipment drapes and sterile solutions
  2. Assist the surgical team by passing instruments and supplies during procedures
  3. Use retractors suction or other equipment to assist in procedures
  4. Maintain a sterile environment and monitor sterile techniques to prevent infection
  5. Count sponges needles and instruments before and after surgery to ensure accuracy
  6. Ensure all surgical equipment is functioning properly
  7. Handle specimens appropriately and ensure they are sent to the Lab for analysis
  8. Assist with patient positioning skin preparation and transport as needed
  9. Decontaminate clean and restock operating rooms and equipment after procedures
  10. Collaborate with surgeons nurses and anesthesiologists for smooth workflow
  11. Respond promptly to changes during procedures and anticipate surgeon needs
  12. Comply with hospital policies and infection control practices
  13. Report all issues regarding instruments equipment patient care etc. to the Surgery Director
  14. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program. Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) is preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

Work Experience: One 1 year of surgical technologist experience is preferred.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures instruments and sterile technique
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Ability to work and collaborate as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Time management skills to quickly set up and turnover operating rooms to support surgical schedules

Physical Requirements:
  • Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time
  • Assist in moving or positioning patients which may require coordinated team lifting
  • Frequent lifting pulling pushing and/or maneuvering up to 50 pounds including patients surgical trays equipment position aids wheelchairs patient beds etc.
  • Fine motor skills to handle delicate instruments and perform tasks with precision
  • Good handeye coordination for passing tools holding retractors and using equipment
  • Ability to observe details at a close range to identify instruments monitor sterile field read screens medication labels etc.
  • Ability to clearly and quickly exchange and communicate information accurately and so others will understand
  • Occasionally move about the department and facility to access various departments and patient care areas.
  • Frequently position self to access and maintain equipment and provide patient care.

OSHA EXPOSURE CATEGORY: A Has exposure to blood borne pathogens.
