Job Description

Please note: This position is contract roleup to 5 years with possibility of conversion to career. We offer full benefits (medial dental vision 403B & pension plans)

This position is based in Richmond CA and offers a hybrid work environment including both remote and office centered work. The standard for hybrid work is a minimum of four days per week inperson and up to one teleworking day per week. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Departments operational business needs and subject to change at any time consistent with the CDPH Telework Program.

The mission of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Tuberculosis Control Branch is to reduce tuberculosis (TB) in California with the eventual aim of eliminating the disease in the state. Tuberculosis (TB) is a lifethreatening disease transmitted through the air with extensive medical and economic consequences. It is the leading infectious disease killer in the world and continues to be a serious public health issue in California. Every year about 2000 Californians are diagnosed with TB of whom half require hospitalization. 1 in 6 individuals diagnosed with TB die within five years even with modern treatments and survivors may experience lifelong disability. In this role you will work as part of the TB registry team to ensure complete and accurate reporting of TB in California. You will develop subject matter expertise in TB reporting guidelines and in data quality control. You will act independently to conduct trainings on TB reporting data quality and the use of electronic surveillance reporting systems and directly assist local health department staff when they have questions or concerns in these areas. You will serve as a storyteller by developing data visualizations and dashboards to make public health data useful and accessible for internal and external audiences. You will also develop and refine reports used by CDPH and local health departments analyze and interpret data and present data to public health audiences.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

  • Proficiency in SAS programming language
  • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations
  • Ability to develop subject matter expertise necessary to consult with and train others
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills in English and ability to collaborate with other professionals and other staff; ability to write effectively communicate complex information for scientific publications in a clear and concise manger.
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques including statistical procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word Access PowerPoint Excel and Outlook


    • Masters in Public Health (MPH)
    • Knowledge of tuberculosis disease control and prevention
    • Experience with and knowledge of CDC tuberculosis surveillance procedures and forms specifically the Report of a Verified Case of Tuberculosis (RVCT)
    • Demonstrated interested in Public Health Informatics
    • Ability to prepare programmatic and statistical reports
    • Ability and willingness to travel
    • Proficiency in one or more languages: R SQL python etc.
    • Proficiency in one or more data visualization packages (e.g. PowerBI Tableau Rshiny)
    • Research skills at a level to evaluate alternate solutions and develop recommendations
