Job Duties

The VDOT Richmond District Environmental Team is seeking a qualified individual to plan and coordinate architectural history and/or historic engineering components of our regional statewide cultural resource program. The selected applicant will apply projectlevel techniques principles and practices used in the collection and analysis of cultural resources data; assess eligibility of above ground cultural resources to the National Register of Historic Places; determine effects of transportation projects on historic properties; and apply cultural resource management principles and techniques in the coordination of transportation projects. Additionally the individual in this role will coordinate with various state federal and other stakeholders; develop scopes of work on projects negotiate with consultants and determine acceptance of completed studies in accordance with professional standards. The selected applicant will also organize and provide the cultural resource component for district and residency environmental training.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of federal and state transportation environmental and cultural resource statutes regulations policies and procedures.
Ability to apply technical and scientific principles to the management of cultural resources in transportation projects.
Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
Ability to resolve complex environmental engineering problems and offer logical solutions.
Degree in architectural history or history or a graduate degree in archaeology required. Degree in a closely related discipline consistent with the Secretary of the Interiors Professional Qualification standards may also be accepted.
Valid drivers license

Additional Considerations

Demonstrated experience managing designing and implementing architectural surveys/studies and report production including the development of National Register eligibility determinations.
Prior experience coordinating the Section 106 process with state/federal agencies engaging with consulting parties and drafting agreement documents is desired.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
Project management experience with a transportation focus in applying technical environmental principles and practices related to cultural resource management.
Proficiency in the use of GIS software in cultural resource management contexts.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite programs Word Excel and PowerPoint.

Special Instructions

Fingerprint based background check references work history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Position is designated as essential to support emergency operations and may be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
