The Role

Northeastern University London invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Computer Science Teaching and Scholarship. The appointee will be teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and provide service to the discipline in line with the evolving needs and aspirations of the Faculty and University. Appointments will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and service excellence.

Core duties will include development and provision of innovative and inclusive teaching in relevant areas of Computer Science at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and professional service commensurate to career stage. Preference may be given to candidates with active interests in the relationship of Computer Science to one or more of the following areas: financial technologies datadriven humanities and social sciences cognitive science information visualisation machine learning and applied engineering.

Priority will be given to Northeastern University London faculty nearing the end of fixed term contracts.

Candidates will be considered across all areas of Computer Science. We are especially seeking exceptional educators whose teaching contributes to fundamental undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Computer Science including but not limited to:

  • Python Programming

  • Web Services

  • ObjectOriented Programming Design

  • Software Engineering

Opportunities for disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship abound: the Faculty of Computing Mathematics Engineering and Natural Sciences (CoMENS)s grounding in humanics brings together computing engineering and natural sciences with humanities based on groundbreaking research and researchoriented teaching practices. While this position is primarily focused on Teaching & Scholarship we are supportive of candidates whose research demonstrably contributes to the facultys priority areas (namely nextgeneration software foundations of AI and humancentred AI).

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Computing Mathematics Engineering and Natural Sciences (CoMENS) is undergoing significant growth at Northeastern University London. It is home to four interdisciplinary undergraduate dualdegree (in UK and US) programmes in the areas of Data Science Data Science and Politics Computer Science and Business and Computer Science and Philosophy; four postgraduate programs in the areas of AI Ethics Data Science Computer Science and Technology Leadership; and five degree apprenticeship programmes in the areas of AI Data Science Digital and Technology Solutions and Biosciences.

The CoMENS Faculty plays a major part in Northeastern Universitys global experience program offering undergraduate courses in Computer and Data Science Mathematics Engineering Physics Biology Chemistry and Healthcare striving to inspire and equip entering students to be outstanding scientists

Person Specification Criteria

To undertake this role the following should applyshould you not have the experience below please do highlight where transferable skills would assist with you undertaking the role. Unless specified all criteria are considered essential.

Qualifications

For Assistant Professor:

  • PhD completed or near completion (all but dissertation) or equivalent professional experience in a relevant area

  • FHEA status or equivalent achieved or expected (desirable)

For Associate Professor:

  • PhD completed or equivalent professional experience in a relevant area

  • FHEA status or equivalent achieved or expected

Key Criteria

For Assistant Professor:

  • FHEA status or equivalent achieved or expected

For Associate Professor:

  • Demonstrates through evidence excellent intellectual and practical leadership to be adaptable innovative and inclusive in teaching and service

  • Willingness and capacity to engage and develop working relationships with external partners and with colleagues across diverse disciplines in Northeastern University London and across the Northeastern University global network as well as undertake continuous professional development for such purposes

  • Willingness and capacity to undertake academic leadership tasks including line management and leadership of strategic projects as well as continuous professional development for such purposes

For both:

  • Willingness and capacity to undertake continuous professional development in relation to institutionally strategic themes including but not limited to technology data sustainability and ethics

  • Ability to develop excellent educational provision in areas with significant appeal to students including at postgraduate level and with a focus on experiential learning

  • Flexibility and capacity to teach across a wide range of courses where appropriate in collaboration with specialists from other disciplines

  • Teaching competency in Computer Science to Levels 47 (i.e. both undergraduate and postgraduate levels)

  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills including presentation skills both facetoface and online

  • Excellent IT skills and evidence of supporting the integration of technologies into learning and teaching

  • Excellent timemanagement and organisational skills
