Special Education Teacher Job Description Primary Purpose
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the core academic subject area assigned to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual emotional physical and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society and live a good life with others.
Qualifications Education/Certification:
- Bachelors degree from accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education (EC12
- Demonstrate competency of special education laws and regulations
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
- Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process
- Knowledge of the development and implementation of Individual Education Plan (IEP)
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Experience:
- At least one year student teaching or approved internship
Major Responsibilities and Duties Instructional Strategies
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the districts curriculum requirements and show written preparation as required.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop IEPs through the ARD Committee process.
- Implement instructional therapeutic or skill development programs with written preparation.
- Plan and use instructional strategies and materials suited to students needs.
- Work with classroom teachers to modify curricula and assist special education students.
- Participate in ARD committee meetings regularly.
- Conduct assessments and use results to plan instruction.
- Present content according to IEP guidelines.
- Maintain IEP progress reports.
- Use varied instructional techniques and media.
- Supervise teacher aides and volunteers.
- Incorporate technology in teaching.
- Follow district guidelines and policies.
Student Growth/Development:
- Conduct formal and informal assessments of student achievement.
- Provide or supervise personal and medical care as specified in IEPs.
- Support extracurricular activities and school mission.
Classroom Management and Organization:
- Create a learning environment appropriate to students development.
- Manage behavior per Student Code of Conduct including physical intervention if necessary.
- Consult teachers on behavior management as per IEP/BIP.
- Collaborate with resource personnel on student needs.
- Take precautions to protect students and materials.
- Assist in choosing instructional materials.
Communication:
- Maintain open communication with parents students and staff.
- Build professional relationships.
- Communicate clearly and accurately.
- Engage in staff development to enhance skills.
- Stay informed on laws and policies affecting special education.
- Compile and maintain reports and records.
- Attend meetings and serve on committees as needed.
International Baccalaureate
Teachers attend IB training within the first year of contract and with each evaluation cycle. Training costs are covered by MWS and may occur during summer. Teachers are expected to participate in unit planning collaboration and instructional responsibilities.
Other Responsibilities
Maintain confidentiality as per FERPA and HIPAA guidelines. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise assigned teacher aide(s).
Equipment Used
Computer printers copier scanner fax multiline phone with voicemail.
Expectations Beyond the Classroom Duty:
Teachers are assigned supervision duties (e.g. morning crosswalk cafeteria carline) to maintain safety.
After School Events:
Teachers are expected to attend events outside regular hours to build relationships with families. Examples include:
- Back to School Night
- Open House
- IB nights
Working Conditions
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Frequent physical activity: standing bending lifting.
- Move classroom materials and equipment.
- Lift and assist students with physical disabilities; use physical restraint when required by IEP.
- Possible exposure to biological hazards.
- Maintain regular attendance.
