Job Description Summary:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the supervision of Dr. Jianming Qius supervision in the KUMC Microbiology Department participate in research on parvovirus infection and AAV transduction biology and gene therapy. In addition there are multiple outstanding clinicians faculty and research staff in the department and across the institution with whom the postdoctoral associate may collaborate.
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a timelimited appointment the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a fulltime regimen of advanced training and research train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia participate in the Universitys Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD DVM PsyD PharmD etc. and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan multitask and complete projects. Ideally the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments analyze data write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications and supervise graduate students.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

Research Overview: Work with faculty mentors to design and prioritize research projects.

  • Conduct independent research on parvovirus infection and AAV transduction biology and gene delivery into airways. Radioactive materials 32P) will be used.

  • Work with other lab researchers on a collaborative basis in data collection analyses and preparation of manuscripts.

  • Assist in the development and preparation of grant applications and manuscripts.

  • Work effectively as part of the research team and mentor other more junior members on the team.

  • Provide guidance to graduate students under the direction of Dr. Qiu.

Postdoc Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook prepare publicationquality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peerreviewed literature.

  • Read literature articles develop new ideas and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.

  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.

  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts manuscripts and posters.

  • Submit fellowship applications as eligible to bolster research funding and CV building for projects.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department of Microbiology understand and follow all assigned duties and attend regularly scheduled research team meetings.

Work Environment

Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment which does not usually subject the employee to any unpleasant elements.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Ph.D in Life Science.

  • Work Experience: Excellent communication and presentation skills as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • Experience and expertise in virology molecular biology and animal studies.

  • Demonstrate significant accomplishments with peerreviewed publications.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to education experience and training qualifications relative to the requirements of the position and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
