Job Description

POSITION: Nurse Supervisor 210 days per year 8 hours per day.

LOCATION: All Locations

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Student Services

JOB SUMMARY: Provides for the promotion and maintenance of health in the school community.



PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The nurse supervisor is responsible for managing coordinating supervising and evaluating all aspects of the nursing services for the Ellensburg School District; for ensuring compliance with School Board Policy Federal State and Local regulations regarding nursing services for students. Candidates who are bilingual and/or have a diverse background are encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Supervises assigned personnel (e.g. training evaluation interviewing assigning tasks etc. for the purpose of ensuring that functions are completed within district performance standards.
  • Strong leadership vision and interpersonal communication skills to effectively manage programs and supervise employees.
  • Provides professional nursing services including nursing assessments identification of health problems development of student health care plans referrals for diagnosis and treatment recommendations for educational modifications followups and evaluations in accordance with District policy professional standards of practice and health care provider orders.
  • Provides sub coverage for district schools when a pool sub is not available
  • Assesses students referred for illness or injury and provide first aid for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating followup care.
  • Administers mandated screening (e.g. vision dental hearing etc) and makes referrals as needed for follow up care.
  • Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  • Maintains effective communication with administrators teachers other school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Orders supplies and materials as needed for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Dispenses medications and/or trains other school employees to dispense medications in accordance with established State laws and District procedures.
  • Provides health information and counseling for students parents and staff.
  • Implements a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
  • Manages school health records in accordance with district policy and procedure and state law; and assists in the preparation and submission of reports for the Superintendent and State Agencies as needed.
  • Provides health related classroom instruction as needed.
  • Initiates contacts with and acts as a liaison between the home school community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification evaluation and placement of students into special education programs and writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan as needed.
  • Utilizes continuing education opportunities to enhance professional knowledge in both nursing and education fields.
  • Participates as an active member of the school community promoting health and wellness.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health related issues.
  • Reviews student medical information presented from school sites for the purpose of evaluating individual student needs and assisting each school with the accurate maintenance of student records.
  • Trains general district staff regarding specific health conditions (e.g. diabetes allergies asthma etc. for the purpose of ensuring staff have information to effectively deal with students with health conditions.
  • Trains personnel that work directly with students health needs (e.g. administering medications specialized procedures allergy treatment feeding administration catheterizations etc. for the purpose of ensuring that district personnel have the necessary knowledge to perform their functions in compliance with district state and federal requirements.
  • Manages school health records in accordance with district policy and procedure and state law; prepares and submits reports for the superintendent and state agencies as needed.
  • Participates in the development of healthrelated policies and procedures in compliance with state mandates and current health practices.
  • Oversees implementation of district policy and procedure in regard to medication protocol to safely store administer document and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
  • Makes recommendations for health services annual budget and critical needs requests.
  • Maintains effective communication with administrators teachers other school personnel and parents/guardians to enhance cooperative action to meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home school community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
  • Continue education to enhance professional knowledge in nursing and leadership.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Possess knowledge of health standards and hazards; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; pediatric and family nursing practices; community health concepts; and pertinent policies codes regulations and/or laws.
  • Possess skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including adhering to safety practices; administering first aid; safely handling hazardous materials/waste; operating equipment used in clinical setting; operating standard office equipment and pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule a number of activities meetings and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; communicate both orally and written in an effective manner; work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups in an effective manner; independently problem solve analyze issues interpret guidelines and create effective action plans; adapt to changing work priorities maintain confidentiality and work as a member of a team in an effective manner.
  • Bilingual skills preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Qualified to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington and hold an unrestricted license.
  • Community Health or School Nurse experience preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) in nursing preferred
  • Current First Aid/CPR Card.
  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • 8 Hours/Day 210 Days/Year NonRepresented FLSA exempt.
