Job Title: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
POSITION SUMMARY
The position of Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is to provide and manage nursing services and health related training to school staff and students with the clinical direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). This position is responsible for meeting the physical needs of medically fragile and/or physically challenged students and assisting the teacher in providing instruction to the students. This position does not supervise any employees and reports to the Director of Student Service or designee.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists students in various settings to meet their educational goals using appropriate strategies methods materials and/or equipment
- Assists the teacher in instruction and classroom management activities as assigned
- Provides direct instructional or tutorial assistance to physically challenged/medically fragile students in a variety of subjects and at different levels of education
- Assists the teacher in program planning and in student staffings
- Monitors and assists groups of children who are participating in a variety of classroom activities
- Attends class and assists with students who have been mainstreamed into regular classes and provides assistance as necessary e.g. monitoring student behavior reinforcing learning and providing liaison between the regular and the special classes
- Assists students with selfhelp skills such as feeding changing diapers social skills and motor skills
- Administers medications within the scope of federal state and district rules/regulations
- Implements Health Management Plans under the supervision of a registered nurse which could include intermittent clean catheterization oxygen therapy tonsil suctioning and tube feedings
- Works closely with teachers and students to provide individualized assistance as needed under the teachers general and/or specific guidance
- Collects data on student progress and behavior as directed
- Manages children outside the classroom in restrooms the cafeteria and during recess periods
- Lifts and carries children as necessary
- Implements behavioral support plans and protocols that may include physical interventions
- Supports other staff on implementing student Health Management Plans
- Communicates with parents regarding health problems and follow up on medical concerns
- Operates and maintains medical equipment and classroom medical supplies
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position
- Dresses in a professional and appropriate manner for the assignment and work setting
- Performs other duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Hold a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) License or higher. Prior job related experience preferably in schools.
Skills: Medically trained to carry out physicianprescribed orders for medical procedures. Medically trained to recognize signs and symptoms of potential health problems (example: medication reaction respiratory difficulty). Must be alert to mental and physical handicaps (e.g. autism down syndrome cerebral palsy) and the capabilities of students and react in a sensitive and helpful way to situations in the classroom and school setting. Operation of a computer standard office machines telephone and other technology equipment. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication including correct use of grammar punctuation and spelling. Excellent secretarial/clerical skills including typing filing organizing and basic arithmetic calculations.
Abilities: Work harmoniously with others. Work and communicate effectively with students parents and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English Spanish or other languages related to the job. Work independently without supervision and with minimum oral/written instructions. Ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods understand and carry out oral and written instructions maintain confidentiality of student records meet schedules and deadlines read/interpret/apply rules regulations and policies.
Continuing Education/Training Clearances: Preemployment criminal justice fingerprint clearance and criminal background check. Possess or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid first aid and CPR card. Possess or have the ability to obtain appropriate district approved restraint training.
