JOB TITLE:Dyslexia Specialist

REPORTS TO:Dyslexia Coordinator

WAGE:Exempt

Pay Grade:AI 2

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Dyslexia Specialist is responsible for supporting the dyslexia coordinator campus staff and dyslexia teachers in their efforts to prepare students for Academic Success.

All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity support organizational goals communicate in a clear and respectful manner championing the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Practitioner or Therapist Lincense
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or University
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate

Preferred:

  • Good motivational skills with students and teachers
  • Experience in teaching other teachers
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Flexible and patient

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • 2 years of successful teaching

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Fidelity The lead will help monitor fidelity to corrective reading programs in the district. The position will also advocate for students and teachers when developing caseloads for campuses.

  • Review teacher and student schedules
  • Track service time logs
  • Observe teacher student engagement to program fidelity
  • Review teacher caseloads
  • Track student progress through the program

Providing Staff Development

  • Model effective instructional strategies for classroom
  • Coach teachers to develop their capacity to reflect upon practice generate ideas and increase professional selfawareness.
  • Provide staff development / resources on effective dyslexia sessions and assist in developing a session schedule.
  • Promote an understanding of the dyslexia the process in IDEA and 504 to administrators and teachers and how they are integrated.
  • Train SISD teachers in Reading by Design
  • Dyslexia teachers

  • Campus general education teachers with total of 5 Dyslexia students or less

Monitoring The lead will help monitor fidelity to corrective reading programs in the district. The position will also advocate for students and teachers when developing caseloads for campuses.

    • Monitor the academic progress of identified students following dyslexia
    • Monitor the academic progress of identified students following interventions based on Universal screening dyslexia screening and state testing data.

Assisting with Effective Interventions The lead will coordinate with other support program departments to ensure a collaborative process for student success. The lead will help determine caseloads and provide updates for campus services.

  • Assist administrators and teachers with the planning and implementation of effective dyslexia interventions
  • Collaborate with the DPM referral team
  • Review communication and integration processes
  • Review student needs with dyslexia teachers and collaborative team members
  • Assist student and teachers to avail themselves of their

Meeting Preparation The lead will support dyslexia teachers in preparation for ARD 504 Dyslexia screening and DPM referral meetings at monthly meetings.

  • Provide preparation for student meetings
  • Provide clarification for screening data meetings
  • Assist with monthly meetings pertaining to department metrics
  • Asist SIMS clerks with Coding questions pertaining to dyslexia students
  • Use student software to disaggregate dyslexia
  • Train teachers to use student software to disaggregate
  • Assist administrators and teachers to use the data to identify students who need additional assistance or accommodations for classroom instruction and state testing.

Communicating

  • Maintain ongoing communication with administrators dyslexia teachers and program

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: physical mobility standing prolonged sitting some lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling reaching/repetitive hand motions and the ability to work with frequent interruptions. May be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist nonambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards. Mental demands: Ability to maintain emotional control under stress; ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data ability to be effective in both oral and written communication. Travel within the district as required.
