INTERN EXPERIENCE AT UNITED WAY WORLDWIDE

Interns at United Way Worldwide gain valuable learning and working experience at a leading nonprofit organization. Our goal is to make every intern who works with us learn about the area of work they believe they plan to pursue after graduation. We want each intern to feel included valuable and productive in the department in which they are assigned. In addition to the handson experience youll receive working at the largest nonprofit in the world you will be provided with weekly meetings led by subject matter experts and professional development workshops when available.

Marketing & Communications Social Media Team

POSITION SUMMARY

The Social Media Community Intern is a new and vital role on United Way Worldwides (UWW) Digital Marketing team. Reporting to the Director of Social Media this position supports the of a comprehensive community engagement strategy across UWWs social media platforms. The intern will help enhance online engagement and cultivate a vibrant inclusive digital community by building meaningful relationships with UWWs social audience encouraging interaction and amplifying the impact of the United Way Network locally nationally and globally.

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful communicator creative problemsolver and active social listener who thrives on engagement and can represent UWWs brand voice with clarity and authenticity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Community Engagement

  • Serve as a frontline voice for UWW on social media by monitoring and responding to comments DMs and questions in a timely respectful and brandaligned manner under the guidance of the Social Media Director.
  • Recognize and elevate usergenerated content community stories and positive user interactions that showcase United Ways global impact.
  • Support audience growth and community cohesion by creating a welcoming and inclusive digital environment.
  • Help build a welcoming inclusive digital environment that supports audience growth and community cohesion.

Social Listening & Engagement

  • Monitor brand mentions hashtags and relevant social conversations to track sentiment trends feedback and emerging issues.
  • Identify opportunities for proactive engagement to boost reach relevance and audience connection.
  • Provide timely insights and updates to the Social Team on community sentiment and relevant trends to help inform future content and engagement strategies.

Relationship Building

  • Cultivate relationships with key followers advocates and influencers to support longterm engagement and brand affinity.
  • Identify and surface testimonials community stories and social moments from the United Way Network for amplification.
  • Support storytelling and crosspromotion opportunities by identifying impactful work from local United Ways (LUWs) across UWW channels.

CommunityDriven Content & Campaign Support

  • Collaborate with the Social Team to source pitch and shape communitydriven content that brings local and global impact stories to life.
  • Assist in the planning and of future social media campaigns with a strong focus on community engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure content aligns with United Ways voice mission and social media strategic goals.

Data Reporting & Optimization

  • Track daily interactions sentiment and engagement metrics through Sprout Socials Smart Inbox.
  • Contribute community insights to monthly analytics reports in partnership with the Social Media Director.
  • Use data and trends to recommend improvements in voice engagement tactics and content alignment.

Trend Monitoring & Innovation

  • Stay current on platform updates algorithm shifts industry trends and nonprofit digital marketing practices.
  • Suggest creative engagement formats and experiment with new ways to build community.
  • Apply a humancentered and inclusive lens to all social interactions and content ideas.

EDUCATION/REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in communications social media marketing journalism digital media or a related field.
  • Demonstrated passion for social media and community building.
  • Strong written communication skills with sharp attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with major and emerging platforms including Instagram TikTok LinkedIn Facebook X (Twitter) and Bluesky.
  • Experience with tools such as Sprout Social Canva Adobe Creative Suite or similar platforms is a plus.
  • A collaborative teamoriented mindset and the ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong cultural awareness and the ability to respectfully engage with a diverse global audience.

This internship takes place at the United Way Worldwide office at 701 N. Fairfax St. Alexandria VA 22314.

TIME FRAME

Summer June 2 2025 to July 31 2025

Pay Rate:$21.00 $25.00 / hour
