Pay Range: $13.88$19.72

Offering rate will vary within the listed hourly range above. *Supported by the Department budget & related experience/education*

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Road and Bridge Foreman the Asphalt Laborer will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of asphalt roads. As a Laborer you provide physical labor on a construction site. Under direct supervision you will be expected to safely operate machinery and be responsible for its maintenance and upkeep. You will assist skilled trades as needed and load and unload deliveries to the work site. In addition you will maintain a safe job site by removing any hazards. This is a seasonal 90day position.

Minimum Requirements:

Driving: Must have a valid Kansas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A and be insurable with the Nations insurance.

Experience: 25 years experience in highway construction and/or maintenance including asphalt.. Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving. Knowledge of safely operating and maintaining heavy equipment and vehicles. A record of satisfactory attendance and performance in all prior and current employment.

Education: High school diploma or GED

Interpersonal Skills: Courtesy tact and diplomacy are essentials elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the PBPN for purposes of giving or obtaining information building relationships or soliciting cooperation.

Knowledge:

  • Road Maintenance & Truck Driving: Knowledge of materials methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of asphalt roadways. Knowledge of machines and tools including their designs uses repair and maintenance. Knowledge of driving a truck and trailer including but not limited to end dumps.
  • Public Safety & Security: Knowledge of occupational safety policies and procedures when engaging with hazardous materials traffic hazards and heavy equipment. Promoting a safety culture within the Nation.
  • Mechanical & Mathematical: Knowledge of equipment operations and the maintenance of large equipment and trucks. Knowledge of mathematics and simple formulas for mixing materials.
  • English Grammar: Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words rules of composition and grammar with the ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

Skills:

  • Operational SkillsWatching and reading gauges dials or indicators to ensure a machine or piece of equipment is working properly.
  • Interpersonal skillsremains open to others ideas and exhibits a willingness to try new processes. Works well independently with close supervision and together with others in a teamoriented environment.
  • Dependablearrive to work on time follows instructions responds positively to direction and feedback.
  • Organizeduses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans for assigned work orders. Accurate thorough and monitors own work for quality and meets deadlines for all assignments with little to no errors.

Abilities:

  • Time Management: Must be available to work the assigned schedule and available as needed to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of the position which may include nights weekends holidays and overtime. Ability to be reliable punctual and dependable in order to meet the needs of the department and Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.
  • Selective Attention: Ability to work with frequent interruptions and in all weather conditions.
  • Change Management: Ability to adapt to change e.g. work environment unexpected events and procedures.
  • Comprehension & Technology: Ability to learn quickly listen and understand and convey information to others. Judgement: Ability to assess a situation sometimes hazardous as quickly and soundly as possible.
