Job Description Summary

The Freedom to Learn Graduate Intern will increase their competencies across several Student Affairs domains including Advising & Supporting Leadership and Social Justice. The learning objectives will be accomplished by attending various meetings and by interacting with justiceimpacted students and listening to their stories and providing support. The Intern will conduct research and prepare a presentation on education recidivism and on hurdles faced by justiceimpacted students. The Interns primary project will be to produce a reference guide with community partners what resources they provide and the details on said partnership.

Job Description

The Freedom to Learn Graduate Intern will increase their competencies across several Student Affairs domains including Advising & Supporting Leadership and Social Justice. With guidance from the Freedom to Learn Specialist the Intern will

  • Establish rapport with students community partners colleagues and others that acknowledge differences in lived experiences know and use referral sources (community partners) and exhibit referral skills in seeking expert assistance

  • Maintain an appropriate degree of privacy that follows FERPA requirements develop trusting relationships

  • Think critically creatively and imagine possibilities for solutions that do not currently exist or are not apparent

  • Identify and consult with community and college partnerships to make informed decisions and provide full support to students

  • Articulate a foundational understanding of social justice within the higher education context

  • Connect and build meaningful relationships with others while recognizing the multiple intersecting identities perspectives and developmental differences people hold

The learning objectives will be accomplished by attending various meetings (with students leadership and community partners) with the Freedom to Learn Specialist and by interacting with justiceimpacted students and listening to their stories. The Intern will conduct background research on education and recidivism and on hurdles that justiceimpacted students face and prepare a presentation combining what was learned through research and experience. The Interns primary project will be to research and produce a reference guide that identifies all current community partners what resources they provide and details on partnership; this guide will be used to improve referral. Once the Intern is ready to meet individually with students they will consult with Freedom to Learn Specialist about potential crisis a student is encountering determine which partnership would best serve that student and make the referral with confidence and reassurance for the student.
