Assistant Supervisor Electronics Technician (Traffic Signals)

Position Function:

Oversees and performs functions related to the design maintenance documentation programming and implementation of all Traffic Control systems. Oversees up to four journeymen and contractors on the installation maintenance and repair of the electronics and electrical equipment in the Traffic Signals section.

Duties:

Principal Duties Involve:

  1. Coordinate assign review and participate in the work with journeymen contractors and apprentices involved in the installation service and repair of Traffic Signal electronic/electrical systems.
  2. Is responsible for schedules procedures and meeting established performance and safety standards.
  3. Provide for employee training and input to employee performance appraisals.

Other Duties Include:

  1. Oversees and participates in the design review and estimation of electronic/electrical Traffic Signal systems as applied to work projects.
  2. Compiles related work reports records and as built drawings.
  3. Consults with and coordinates with other outside agencies such as BC Hydro consulting engineers technicians inspectors and the general public.
  4. Prioritize and organize the work of the Traffic Signal shop.
  5. Carry out a preventative maintenance program for all Traffic Signal electronic/electrical equipment.
  6. Maintain accurate Traffic Signal records and maintenance documentation.
  7. Evaluate and assess technical information on electronic/electrical equipment and make recommendations regarding their acquisition as they relate to Traffic Signals.
  8. Create and modify design specifications for electronic/electrical equipment as required.
  9. Review Engineering reports drawings and proposals and make related recommendations.
  10. Create update and maintain databases technical drawings inventory lists and documentation.
  11. Prepare technical site inspection reports and arrange for testing and certification of electronics and electrical installations ensuring conformance to standards set by the Canadian Electrical Code.
  12. Prepare specifications and tender documents job cost analysis monitor project costs progress reports and verify expenditures.
  13. Consult and coordinate with agencies such as other Municipalities Regional or Provincial Governments or Public Utilities and the general public as they relate to Traffic Signals.

  6. Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health & Safety regulation
  7. City of Victoria health and safety programs Exposure Control Plans Operating Guidelines and Standard Job Procedures
  8. City of Victoria policies related to Personnel and Health and Safety
  9. B.E.W. Local 230 collective agreement

Detail any adverse conditions which the position may involve:

Subject to callout at any hour or day to assess/dispatch emergency response/repairs due to accidents storms or equipment failures 24 hours a day. Able to work in confined spaces.

Qualifications Required for this Position Basic Qualifications:

Education: High school graduation.

Technical school Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology (member in good standing with ASTTBC or eligibility to apply) and/or current and valid interprovincial BC Certificate in Trades Qualification as an Electrician.

Current and valid Class 5 BC Drivers License.

Accredited courses in Management and Leadership Studies 80 hrs).

Completion of a course and up to date knowledge in the CEC.

IMSA Traffic Signals Level 3 Sr. Field Technician

Skills: A working knowledge of Traffic Signal operations and timings

Organize and prioritize the work of the team.

Understand and apply the techniques of electrical and electronic systems repair and service.

Ability to understand and implement wireless technologies.

Use hand power measuring tools and diagnostic instruments of the trade.

Read and interpret technical drawings manuals and related codes.

Maintain accurate records.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.

Work safely and coordinate a safety program.

Working level operation of current City word processing CAD spreadsheet and related specialty software.

Experience: 4 years of related experience including supervisory experience or an

equivalent combination of education and experience.

Independence: Work is generated by a maintenance schedule requests from other sections or from Supervisor.

Work is reviewed through reports to Supervisor

Work requiring an electrical permit is to be referred to Electrical Permit Holder

Essential Qualifications:

Lift and move heavy material and equipment

Work in awkward positions bent over with hands in the air

Periods of intense concentration while diagnosing problems

Required to look at VDT

Exposure to gas and fumes (vehicle exhaust).

Work outside in all weather conditions.

Work outside in close proximity to traffic.

Ability to work from heights.
