Job Description

Hope For Youths Residential Services Department provides community based trauma informed youth and family driven care to adolescents and young adults in Nassau and Suffolk County. Serving youth from varying points of entry with the child welfare system juvenile justice system and runaway and homeless youth/young adults the opportunities to alter the trajectory for youth in need are abundant. Youth are supported 24/7 by a team of multidisciplinary professionals paraprofessionals and agency administration that consistently meets standards for accreditation and licensing regulations.


Senior Residential Counselors provide invaluable support to youth during their time with the agency. Although tasks may vary depending on program the Senior Residential Counselor is assigned to the expectation for providing support to colleagues and youth is consistent. Senior Residential Counselors play a vital role in ongoing coaching and mentoring of residential counselors as well as role modeling of engagement with our youth for residential counselors working alongside them.


To be a successful Senior Residential Counselor you must be ready willing and able to do the following always:

  1. Function within the policies and procedures as outlined in the program practice guide and employee manual.
  2. Supervise and support residents using the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention model without the need for therapeutic holds.
  3. Resolve resident issues and complaints.
  4. Achieves positive outcomes for residents including facilitating independent living workshops.
  5. Models the behavior all Residential Counselors should do.
  6. Adhere to state regulations and applicable code of conduct.
  1. Perform other resulting and necessary work to meet the needs and requirements of the clients the program Hope For Youth oversight agency and any other regulatory obligations

How you will generally spend your time in this job:

80 supporting youth (including documentation)

15 supporting residential counselors as shift leader

5 staff meetings/supervision/training


To qualify for this job you need to be or have at minimum:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Valid NYS drivers license in good standing
  3. Ability to:
  • work flexible schedule
  • Lift/move up to fifty 50 pounds
  • Escort residents into the community and to appointments to service providers as needed
  • Physically restrain a child or youth during a crisis situation (TCI Training is provided with focus on deescalation techniques)
  • Read/write reports and log entries repetitive wrist/finger movements
  • Operate a motor vehicle carrying up to 10 children and youth
  • Support other projects as needed within the Residential Department
  • Open to supervision and able to work as part of a team
  • Role model appropriately; nurture teach and structure daily living setting
  • Organize activities and engage youth throughout the shift
  • Support the overall mission of Hope For Youth
  1. Physical Requirements: read/write reports and log entries walking/standing/sitting for prolonged periods bending/stooping kneeling/squatting climbing stairs reaching overhead repetitive wrist/finger movements ongoing access to reliable vehicle and driving own vehicle for work

This opportunity is being offered as FullTime 40hour work week; Saturday 8am4pm TuesdayThursday 3pm11pm Friday 8am4pm
