Performs subprofessional technical work in planning organizing and coordinating the activities of any one or a combination of the Countys comprehensive programs for the elderly; supervises lower level personnel; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Senior Services Program Assistant series of classes are characterized by their responsibility to perform subprofessional technical work in support of program specialists and involves planning organizing and coordinating the implementation of one or a combination of the Countys programs for the elderly. The nature of the work involved does not require the full application of professional level knowledge philosophy theories and practices.
This class differs from the Senior Services Program Assistant I in that the Senior Services Program Assistant II is responsible for planning organizing and coordinating all program activities for a small participant group where social and recreational program activities and nutrition program services resources are limited e.g. islands of Molokai and Lanai; whereas the Senior Services Program Assistant I is responsible for planning organizing and coordinating assigned program activities for one or more senior congregate sites on the island of Maui.
The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position and are consistent with the class concept.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and three years of experience which shall have involved programs or services dealing with the special needs of the elderly or other target group individuals. The work performed shall have included interviewing counseling organizing activities and/or providing information referral and outreach.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle drivers license (equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3.
Knowledge of: the characteristics and needs of the elderly; objectives of the senior services programs; pertinent functions of County State and Federal agencies; community resources pertaining to the elderly; interviewing techniques; public relations; principles and practices of supervision; use of standard office machines and equipment including personal computers peripheral equipment and software applications.
Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons possessing a wide range of educational and work experience backgrounds agency employees representatives of community groups and the general public; plan assign coordinate schedule and direct the work of others; interpret and apply rules regulations policies and procedures; prepare various reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups; use a personal computer.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Effort Grouping: Light
Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions.
EXAMINATIONS ARE ADMINISTERED IN THE COUNTY OF MAUl ONLY
The above examination is being given on an opencompetitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.

PreEmployment/PostOffer Drug Screening Test: All applicants who will enter a safety sensitive position or certain designated categories that the Personnel Services Director has established or who are required by law to be drug tested must pass a preemployment/postoffer drug screening test as a condition of employment. There is no retesting or reevaluation process. Cost for the drug screening test shall be borne by the County of Maui.
