Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Safety Officer develops implements and monitors a comprehensive safety program throughout Equitas Health. The Safety Officer is responsible for managing hazardous communication hazardous waste disposal training coordination of CPR/First Aid and deescalation training personal protective equipment (PPE) monitoring exposures safety activities product corrections and recalls and staying uptodate on applicable laws and regulations. The Safety Officer will partner with the General Counsel & Compliance Officer Senior Compliance Specialist Chief Healthcare Operations Officer Senior Leaders and Directors in developing implementing and managing the safety operations of the organization. This position requires considerable initiative independent judgment and collaborative skills in managing the safety program and interacting with employees across all levels of the organization.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to exercising professional judgment; traveling driving or having reliable transportation; written communication; relationship building; utilizing a computer for typing and research; attending meetings and presenting to small groups.


Job Responsibilities:

  1. Hazardous Communication. Works with applicable departments across the agency to ensure required Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are accessible and current.
  2. Hazardous Waste Disposal. Oversees disposal or cleanup of hazardous and biohazardous materials in our pharmacies clinics and mobile units following all regulatory mandates and guidance.
  3. Training Coordination. Coordinates and tracks staff participation in required CPR/First Aid and deescalation training.
  4. Personal Protective Equipment. Orders distribute and trains on PPE materials across the organization including conducting fit testing for N95 masks. Creates and trains on guidance for proper PPE usage and infection control.
  5. Documents and monitors exposures which may include COVID bloodborne pathogens airborne pathogens needle sticks and other exposures and ensure prompt followup.
  6. Safety Activities. Coordinates occupational safety activities which may include safety drills inspections investigations or other safety events. Maintains a roster of safety leads for each location and offers guidance and support for safety concerns. Coordinates safety committee meetings.
  7. Corrections and Recalls. Researches provide guidance and oversee equipment recalls or medical device corrections
  8. Performance Improvement. Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations concerning safety hazardous materials and waste and emergency preparedness in healthcare settings and incorporates knowledge into practice through the creation of training materials policies and procedures.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related field or equivalent work experience
  • Must have 4 years of experience in safety and/or risk management. Experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Experience with operationalizing processes and workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal presentations.
  • Effective interpersonal skills including the ability to develop a rapport with all employees at all levels. Ability to competently follow through on investigating such potential violations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are a must.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision including the ability to complete projects in a timely manner in a fastpaced and changing environment with multiple priorities and objectives.
  • Must have sensitivity to interest in and competence in cultural differences HIV/AIDS minority health sexual practices and a demonstrated competence in working with persons of color and the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and other computer applications required.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Other Information:

Hours are varied including some evenings and weekends. Background and reference checks will be conducted. In accordance with Equitas Healths DrugFree Workplace Policy preemployment drug testing will be administered.
