IB Programme Curriculum Coordinators Role Description
The Curriculum Coordinator plays an important leadership role in the school community. The Curriculum Coordinator leads his or her respective team of colleagues in educational academic and pedagogical matters with the goal of supporting and enhancing the learning and the attainment/achievement of students in the relevant curriculum strand.
The Curriculum Coordinator is responsible to the Divisional Principal/Vice Principal/IB Programme Coordinator and works closely with the Deputy Head of School with responsibility for PK12 academics.
The Curriculum Coordinator should be collegial supportive and flexible. While the Curriculum Coordinator will be very focussed on the quality of learning in the individual IB curriculum programme a key part of the role will be to work with the other curriculum coordinators as well as the PYP MYP and DP Coordinators to ensure vertical and horizontal continuity and progression. We anticipate that there will still be many occasions during collaborative planning time when cross programme subject teams will meet especially in the Upper School.
The curriculum strand coordinator will seek ways to ensure that the subject/strand contributes to the schools strategic goals of making education more:
- Personalised
- Enriched
- Applied
- International
They should also be aware of any divisionspecific goals.
Models of curriculum coordination may vary between strand (subject) areas and between divisions. The responsibilities outlined below may slightly vary according to these factors.
Specific responsibilities include:
Educational Leadership
- Leading the team of teachers responsible for the programme curriculum strand to ensure that there is consistently the highest possible quality of student learning and educational achievement within the strand. Coverage time will be allocated for the observation of learning and teaching and feedback to teachers using the Looking for Learning methodology
- Ensuring the overall academic standards and assessments within the strand/subject area are maintained at a high standard and that students receive engaging and carefully thoughtout educational experiences.
- Using standardised test and other assessment data to improve learning and teaching.
- Have processes and procedures in place to ensure that the quality of learning and achievement is monitored evaluated and shared.
- Developing the teaching use and assessment of ATL skills as appropriate.
- Fostering and facilitating professional development whether this be external or internal within the curriculum strand team.
- In conjunction with divisional Principals working with programme curriculum strand teachers to develop individual Teachers Professional Growth Plans.
- Promoting the curriculum strand in the school community and providing articles for connexions curriculum guides and other publications.
- Promoting interdisciplinary and integrated studies within the overall programme.
- Providing support guidance and encouragement for new teachers and ongoing support for all other programme strand teachers.
- Leading programme curriculum strand meetings and CPT sessions and reporting back to the School Leadership Team.
- Attending all (monthly after school) curriculum coordination meetings to share ideas and to give feedback about items which are relevant to the school community as a whole.
- Ensure that their team members are fully informed about school/divisional issues and that team concerns are transmitted to school and divisional leaders
Educational Management
- Assuming responsibility for curriculum strand assessment grading and
evaluation practice especially in relation to livetime feedback and SEQTA. - Reviewing all curriculum strand assessment results (internal and external) with programme coordinators and divisional leadership teams.
- Ensuring that the programme strand curriculum is fully articulated in terms of skills and concepts and fully recorded on SEQTA
- Encouraging and participating in collegial peer observations with the enhancement of student learning and achievement at the centre of the process.
- Maintaining updating and coordinating course outlines ILOs IRPs and all other academic documentation to meet IB and ministry requirements
- Working with strand teachers to develop skills and sequence frameworks which enhance overall student learning.
- Where appropriate assisting the Director of Admissions with assessment tools for and placement of prospective students.
- Ensuring that the textbooks and all other academic resources are acquired and connected to learning objectives and outcomes.
- Ensuring that the curriculum is enriched through appropriate visiting speakers trips and visits and cocurricular activities
- Ensuring that curriculum strand communication platforms such as class pages/ web pages are high quality and current.
- Responsible (where relevant) for the programme curriculum strand budget allocation and ensuring that spending allocations are made in a fair and equitable manner which enhances the learning of Mulgrave students.
Professional Development and Support
- Curriculum Coordinators will be actively supported in their professional development as leaders and will be expected to participate in leadership and subject training
- Curriculum Coordinators will be coached and supported in their role by a member of the school leadership team
