High School Learning Specialist

University School of Nashville seeks a dynamic studentcentered educator with expertise in the science of learning and learning differences as well as experience supporting high school students learning partnerships with teachers. Together with the High School Director of Learning Support the Learning Specialist will:

  • Provide oneonone and smallgroup interventions to develop students executive functioning metacognitive skills and use of effective learning strategies
  • Support teachers efforts to effectively engage the full spectrum of students in their classes with pedagogical strategies informed by brainmindeducational science and an understanding of different cognitive profiles
  • Work with students who have diagnosed learning differences and their parents to determine needed academic support and accommodations. Write a Student Success Plan and serve as a liaison between teachers students and families in the implementation of the plan
  • Assist families with referrals to communitybased providers when needed for tutoring therapy and/or evaluation

This is a 0.80 FTE position for theschool year. Candidates should be comfortable with working with students who have a variety of learning profiles. Preference will be given to educators with experience teaching high school students and creating effective inclusive learning environments. The ideal candidate is expected to embrace the idea that all students at USN have the potential to be successful in their own way. Colleagues at USN are asked to actively participate in the life of the high school in ways that showcase their talents gifts and identities.

Candidates should be knowledgeable of research on how implicit biases in race ethnicity gender identity and socioeconomic class can shape curricula and pedagogy classroom culture and student outcomes. Candidates should be able to translate that knowledge into demonstrable actions that promote equitable and just teaching and learning.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Education preferably with a focus on Learning Differences Differentiated Instruction Learning and Cognitive Sciences or a related field.
  • At least three years of teaching high school preferred but not required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A deep fondness for and understanding of adolescents and their developmental needs.
  • A commitment to fostering the belonging of all students in a diverse school community.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Works in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time.
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled office environment.
