Overview
The Senior NurseOT (Operating Theatre) plays a critical role in the surgical team providing highquality nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures. This position not only involves direct patient care but also encompasses the responsibilities of ensuring the operating room environment is safe organized and conducive to a successful surgical outcome. The Senior NurseOT collaborates closely with surgeons anesthesiologists and other healthcare professionals to facilitate efficient operations while maintaining the highest standards of patient care. This role is vital in promoting patient comfort and safety before during and after surgical procedures and serves as a key point of communication among the surgical team helping to reduce the risk of complications and enhance patient satisfaction. The Senior NurseOT is expected to exhibit leadership qualities mentoring junior nurses and contributing to continual quality improvement efforts in the operating theatre.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre before surgical procedures ensuring all instruments and equipment are sterile and available.
- Assist surgeons in various surgical procedures providing necessary instrumentation and support.
- Monitor patient vital signs and respond appropriately to any changes during surgery.
- Perform patient assessments pre and postoperatively to determine individual needs.
- Maintain clear and precise documentation of patient care and surgical procedures performed.
- Participate in and lead preoperative briefings with all members of the surgical team.
- Ensure compliance with sanitary and safety protocols within the operating room.
- Educate patients and their families regarding the surgical process and postoperative care.
- Manage inventory and ensure all surgical supplies are stocked and readily available.
- Coordinate with anesthetists and other team members for effective patient care.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior nursing staff and interns.
- Evaluate and address patient concerns to promote a positive surgical experience.
- Participate in quality assurance and improvement initiatives related to surgical services.
- Stay updated on new surgical techniques and advancements in nursing practices.
- Facilitate communication between patients families and the healthcare team to address any questions or concerns.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) license with a relevant clinical practice.
- Bachelor s degree in Nursing or an equivalent qualification.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an operating theatre setting.
- Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification.
- Pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and trauma nursing core course (TNCC) certifications preferred.
- Clinical experience in a variety of surgical procedures.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Ability to work in a fastpaced highstakes environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a team.
