Job Description

The Embarcadero Media Foundation is seeking a sharp curious and committed journalist to join our awardwinning newsroom as a Peninsula Reporter covering some of the Bay Areas most dynamic communities including Mountain View Redwood City Palo Alto Menlo Park Atherton Portola Valley and Woodside.


This writing position will be focused on the MidPeninsula and will report on public policy community issues city government housing transportation environment and the people shaping our region. The reporter will produce stories for our network of local news sites including Mountain View Voice The Almanac and Redwood City Pulse Palo Alto Online and the weekly print editions of The Almanac and Palo Alto Weekly.


Were looking for a reporter who thrives on enterprise and accountability reporting who can turn around a breaking news brief and then dig into deeper meaningful stories that reflect the needs and concerns of our diverse communities. An ability to be flexible and to dive into new issues every day will be key.


The fulltime job pays $21 to $27 an hour and includes health benefits and a 403(b) savings plan.


What Youll Do:

  • Report and write daily news and longerform enterprise stories for a digitalfirst newsroom
  • Monitor city council and school board meetings watchdog local agencies and track regional trends
  • Develop and maintain source relationships across the midPeninsula
  • File stories on deadline for our Express daily newsletter
  • Occasionally contribute to live events and video or multimedia storytelling
  • Collaborate with staff visual journalists on special reporting projects
  • Engage readers through social media and respond to community feedback
  • Occasionally assist with foundation events and community forums
Requirements

What Were Looking For:

  • 2 years of professional reporting experience
  • Strong writing reporting and interviewing skills
  • Comfort filing PRA requests and pursuing public records
  • A working knowledge of AP Style
  • Strong organizational skills and a proactive attitude
  • Spanish fluency and/or familiarity with San Mateo and Santa Clara counties is a plus
