Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician IV will be responsible for conducting advanced ophthalmic technical support activities that assist the ophthalmologists residents and optometrists in delivering care to patients in the outpatient eye clinic. The Ophthalmic Technician IV will also conduct ophthalmic triage support patient flow and participate in the education of junior ophthalmic technicians and apprentices. Individuals in this position will demonstrate the highest level of ophthalmic technical knowledge and will maintain JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) or Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT).

Essential Functions:
  • Performs advanced ocular examinations on patients of all ages including history taking visual acuity ocular motility assessment intraocular pressure measurement and pupillary assessment. Performs manual lensometry including neutralization of prism glasses. 50
  • Performs imaging including visual field testing OCT pachymetry topography Ascan biometry fluorescein angiography and ocular photography. Produces images of advanced quality. 10
  • Performs advanced refractometry and records findings accurately for provider review. 10
  • Provides advanced patient education on contact lens care glasses and medications. Instructs patients in the insertion and removal of specialty contact lenses and troubleshoots glasses rechecks appropriately. 5
  • Reviews patient triage requests determines urgency and coordinates care appropriately. 5
  • Provides direction education and support to junior ophthalmic technicians. 5
  • Responsible for stocking and checking function of equipment. Attempts minor repairs of equipment. 5
  • Assists lead technician in maintaining efficient patient flow which may include the workup of additional or more complex patients beyond the general clinic expectations. 5
  • Assists with administrative tasks including inbasket management and maintaining standards of work. 5

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:
  • 46 years ophthalmic technician experience multispecialty ophthalmic setting Required

Licenses:
  • BLSBasic Life Support (BLS/CPR) AHA American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
  • COTCertified Ophthalmology IJCAHPO International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology Required

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of advanced ophthalmic assisting principles
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles
  • Epic EHR Documentation
