Job Description

General Summary

The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for Groundskeeper (Maintenance Specialist I)who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesvilles Core Values of Commitment Integrity Respect Innovation and Collaboration.

The preferred hiring range for this position is between $18.00 $19.29 Hourly$37440.00 $40123.20 Annually).As of March 28 2024 this position is in the Labor and Trades bargaining unit in accordance with the CitysCollective Bargaining Ordinance (Ordinance No. 22128. Starting pay for this position is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. Future wage adjustments are subject to terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement between the City and the exclusive bargaining representative. The parties are in the process of negotiating the collective bargaining agreement which will take effect on July 1 2025.

Starting offer is based on applicable education experience and internal equity. This is a fulltime nonexempt position. ThisMaintenance Specialist I position is responsible for functioning as a team member performing mowing fertilization aeration leaf removal invasive and perimeter brush control and snow removal.The position is key to maintaining an extremely effective team that follows defined schedules requiring skilled labor with a high level of responsibility. Positions in this class are responsible for the maintenance construction or landscape/horticultural duties in city parks downtown mall schools rightofways and public recreational facilities. Position may also performconstruction/repair projects park maintenance/renovations tree planting/maintenance and athletic field other duties as assigned. May have supervisory duties. Reports to the Unit Supervisor Crew Leader or other first line supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Operations and Safety

Relationship Management
  • Fields citizen concerns and refers them to the proper authority when appropriate; Represents the department
  • Maintains a productive working relationship with peers and supervisor;
  • Works cooperatively and contributes with other crew members toward completing assigned tasks;
  • Works cooperatively and contributes with volunteers toward completing assigned tasks;
Financial Management
  • May participate in tracking inventory of equipment and operating supplies;
  • May provide input in equipment and annual operating supply needs;
  • Reports to supervisor when supplies or equipment are needed;
  • Uses equipment and consumes operating supplies diligently;
Human Resources
  • Actively participates in performance evaluation system;
  • Positions at this level may be required to participate in training and/or may conduct training for other staff;
  • SelfSupervision:stays on task when left unsupervised;
  • Positions at this level may supervise voluntary and/or seasonal staff;
Reporting and Analysis
  • Follows procedures for time and attendance reporting;
  • Identifies operational deficiencies and suggests revisions;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Experience and Skills

Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Ability to follow basic written and verbal instructions;
  • Ability to perform demanding physical work for continued periods;
  • Ability to work outside with regular exposure to severe weather;
  • General knowledge of the maintenance repair and manual tasks of the area assigned;
  • General knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of mechanical equipment required in the work;
  • General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work;
  • Skills in the use of equipment to which assigned

Physical Conditions & Additional Information

Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor:
HEAVY WORK: Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 50 lbs. frequently and/or up to 20 lbs. constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.

This position may be required to work weekends nights holidays standyby/oncall emergency oncall and/or weatherrelated emergency oncall.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for preemployment reasonable suspicion postaccident and random testing.

The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve exposure to extreme temperatures extreme brightness chemicals/hazardous waste bloodborne pathogens electrical hazards extreme darkness fumes/airborne particles and fuels.

This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration ladder/step stool traffic/roadways driving light equipment driving heavy equipment driving a City vehicle moving mechanical parts and/or confined space(s). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
