The Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry & Fire Protectionis recruiting for an Equipment Operator Journey 2 in Fairbanks.


This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

Please check ourresidency definition to determine if you qualify.


What You Will Be Doing:

Working in this position under direction you will perform as an equipment operator maintaining over 150 miles of forest roads that are the only vehicle access to state forest lands for wildfire access and for commercial and recreational access to state forest lands.


You will operate heavy fire line construction equipment in rugged terrain such as bulldozers loaders and motor graders in fire prevention and suppression work as a Fire Equipment Operator. Fire Equipment Operators are trained in firefighting and operating heavy equipment used in wildland fire control forest protection and conservation project work. Operating heavy equipment is required on the fire line on steep narrow mountain roads under hazardous conditions for road construction and other forestry construction projects. Must be able to work under wet and muddy conditions.


May assist with wildland fire suppression in other qualified positions as needed

The Division of Forestry & Fire Protection (DOF) provides forest resource management on 20 million acres and the vital public safety function of wildland fire protection on over 150 million acres. The Division of Forestry is responsible for developing conserving and enhancing Alaskas forests to provide a sustainable supply of forest resources for Alaskans. The Division is also responsible for ensuring wildland fire suppression resources are in a state of readiness to safely manage wildland fires that pose a threat to life property and resources

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is located in Fairbanks at 3700 Airport Way. The selected candidate will work with a collaborative team that is comprised of highly motivated and dedicated individuals who strive to provide excellent service and support and respect the individual. This position requires travel by ATV snowmachine small plane helicopter and boat to remote locations in Interior Alaska. The ability to travel and work in adverse weather conditions is required. Field work conditions are often arduous and work tasks may be performed independently. Hazards that may be encountered include rugged terrain aviation use hazardous material handling and bears. Work may be performed in inclement weather (cold rain snow) at all times of year. Position may be available for fire assignments; must be available to travel away from the duty location for extended periods of time; and must be able and willing to fly in small fixedwing aircraft helicopters and small boats as necessary. Position may require travel both in and outofstate for fire suppression assignments; may be on standby or recall status during the fire season; may be assigned work in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days
