The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks!

What you will be doing:
Under general supervision this position will play a lead role with tagging studies in the Yukon River Area and may assist with other research projects as needed. These projects use a variety of fish capture methods and the incumbent will be involved with operational planning crew training fieldwork logistics and the install and removal of telemetry monitoring infrastructure. In addition this position involves data entry QA/QC and potentially report writing and report editing as requested for Yukon River Area research projects.

This unique position is an integral part of the Yukon River salmon research team. The position will gain experience in safe capture handling and live release methods of adult salmon. They will work with the project leader and have opportunities to fly aerial tracking surveys visit remote locations to install tracking equipment and work with other governmental and NGOs participating in the project. The position may also have opportunities to further develop skills with report writing data analysis and sampling fish populations while developing and building knowledge and competencies in new areas.

The working environment you can expect:
The primary duty station will be in the ADF&G Fairbanks office. There is the expectation that the incumbent will travel to conduct fieldwork in locations throughout the Yukon River drainage such as Emmonak and possibly Galena Fort Yukon and nearby communities where workday length will vary depending on assigned duties. Room and board would be provided during field work in larger communities but remote camping may be required.

Who we are looking for:
  • Experience in the safe capture radio tagging and live release of adult salmonids.
  • Experience completing time sensitive dataentry QA/QC and summarization of results in a consistent and accurate manner. Specifically experience producing reports and technical information materials using Microsoft Office products (including Excel Word and Outlook); proofreading technical documents; and report writing.
  • Experience conducting work in remote parts of Alaska including field operations field logistics and training and/or supervision of employees in fishery sampling techniques species ID and data collection.
  • Experience in effective communication with crews collecting data in the field and relaying information to a diverse audience including members of the public as well as State Federal and NonGovernmental agencies.
  • Experience working with databases and associated programs such as Microsoft Excel & Access and within the R coding language.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry fisheries science or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

at least 24 semester hours 36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry aquaculture aquatic ecology fisheries resources or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours 24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

at least 12 semester hours 16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry physics mathematics statistics geology hydrology or GIS.

Special Note:

Upper division courses means courses that are specialized indepth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problemsolving analytical thinking skills and theoretical applications with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics microscopic analysis underwater research or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelors degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
