About the Work Unit
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for an Apprentice Electrician in our Aurora location. Under supervision this position assists skilled licensed electricians with the installation repair and maintenance of Traffic Signals Electrical Systems Highway Lighting Warning Beacons Interconnect Communications Variable Message Signs ITS devices and CDOT buildings and grounds within CDOT Region 1 (Metro Denver).
Your duties and responsibilitieswill include but are not limited to the following:
Assist with and perform installations maintenance repair and inspection of electrical infrastructure including but not limited to electrical distribution services roadway and facility lighting equipment and power distribution and inspection of electrical equipment.
Operate equipment such as aerial device backhoe loader trencher concrete saw other specialized equipment and hand and power tools.
Locate underground cables and utilities for contractors and maintenance; operate utility locating equipment and work around and near live electric gas water and other utility lines.
Assist with and install maintain and inspect Traffic Control Devices and systems within Region 1 which include but are not limited to traffic signals flashing beacons lighting variable message signs ITS devices and interconnect systems.
Assist with and install and maintain temporary traffic control devices in work areas according to current policies and standards.
Assist with and install maintain and inspect communication systems including but not limited to systems and equipment for intelligent transportation systems video monitoring and detection fiber optics hardwire and radio systems.
Use computers and other office equipment for communications and documentation such as time sheets fuel and mileage job journal materials etc.
Responds 24/7 to emergencies involving signalized intersections roadway lighting and interchanges and other CDOT electrical emergencies.
Follow safety guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 1080 feet.
Occasional instate/overnight travel.
Frequent travel during work day for training meetings and assigned work orders.
Required to drive CDOT vehicles.
Work around live electric gas water and other utility lines.
Exposure to loud noises.
Exposure to fumes odors gases dusts etc. that may affect breathing eyes and skin.
Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600 V) and electrical shock.
Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time hot and cold.
Required to use computers to accomplish everyday work duties.
Due to locations of some of the equipment must be physically able to work at 11000 feet altitude.
Must be able to read understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Experience Only:
At least two years of progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction in any combination of the following areas:
Process control
Programmable logic controllers
Traffic signals and traffic signal components
Troubleshooting
OR
Experience & Education:
A combination of relevant education apprenticeship program or relevant experience equal to at least two years.
Post highschool education in electrical coursework such as circuitry safety practices and basic electrical information will be considered.
Completion of a satisfactory completion of a formalized electrician apprenticeship program will be considered. A transcript will need to be submitted to verify the education.
Progressively responsible electrical experience in commercial or industrial electrical construction in any combination of the following areas will be considered:
Process control
Programmable logic controllers
Traffic signals and traffic signal components
Troubleshooting

A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
Required to obtain a valid Colorado Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes within 6 months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test) and DOT physical through our medical provider.(For positions that require a CDL)
Required to perform shift work and be on an oncall rotation.
Essential Services Designation Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health safety and welfare.
New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwillpossess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
Registration as an apprentice electrician with the State of Colorado.
Knowledge of the theories principles and best practices of the National Electrical Code.
Knowledge and experience in installing repairing replacing and troubleshooting a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.
Familiarity with fiber optic (wireless and hardwire) cabling handling termination and splicing.
Familiarity with electronics (e.g. fiber optic cellular communications wireless networking).
Experience with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) construction standards National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70 and CDOTs Standards and Specifications book. Traffic coursework is a plus.
