FARGO NORTH DAKOTA (USA). Sanford Health is looking for a BE/BC general surgeon fellowship trained in surgical critical care with extensive experience in trauma to join their emergency general surgery trauma and surgical critical care team in Fargo North Dakota.

This position covers the Surgical Critical Care Service Emergency General Surgery and Trauma Surgery Service
Team consists of ten surgeons and six nurse practitioners
Regions only Level 1 Adult Trauma Center Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center & Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center
Trauma Volume 2700/year. 95 blunt trauma
High volume complex emergency general surgery
Obtain an academic appointment through University of North Dakota Medical School
Teaching of medical students & surgical residents and research opportunities are available
Critical Care Fellowship beginning 2026

Job Description

Trauma Surgeon Admitting Privileges for Trauma Service include the following:

1. Trauma Surgeon admitting privileges will be under the authority of the Trauma Medical Director.

2. Demonstrated competency in the care of adult and pediatric trauma patients.

3. Must meet and abide by the Medical Staff bylaws of Sanford USD Medical Center.

Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. degree. Meets all criteria for appointment to the Surgery Department of the Medical Staff and holds current Board Certification in a surgical specialty recognized by the American Board of Surgery or be board eligible by these organizations. If applicant is not Board Certified they may apply for consideration as per Alternate Pathway Criteria established by the ACS.

Experience can be demonstrated in one of the following ways:An applicant who has just completed a residency shall provide his/her residency or fellowship applicant who is not applying directly out of a residency shall provide a quality profile from hospital(s) where he/she currently has privileges showing his/her clinical activity for the past 12 months including numbers of procedures morbidity mortality infection rates and other complications. Applicant must be able to demonstrate active involvement in the clinical aspects of General Surgery and case volumes should show performance of at least 100 procedures in the past 12 a quality profile is not available from the hospital(s) where the applicant currently has privileges documentation of the applicants clinical activity for the past 12 months is required. Applicant must be able to demonstrate active involvement in the clinical aspects of General Surgery and case volumes should show performance of at least 100 procedures in the past 12 education and experience may be required the more advanced the practice becomes.

Maintenance Requirements for Continued Privileges: Trauma Service Privileges require the Trauma Medical Director* to conduct an annual evaluation of the following criteria: 1. For surgeons who are Boardeligible or Boardcertified maintenance of certification demonstrates evidence of ongoing trauma related education. 2. For any trauma surgeon previously approved through the Alternate Pathway Criteria continued competency for the care of trauma patients must be demonstrated by: A. 36 hours of verifiable external traumarelated CME over a 3 year period B. Performance improvement assessment by the Trauma Medical Director to ensure that patient outcomes compare favorably to other members of the trauma call panel. 3. For the Adult Trauma Medical Director and Pediatric Trauma Medical Director CME requirements must be met by accrual of 12 hours of external traumarelated CME per year or a total of 36 CME/3 years 4. For the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director at least 9 hours of the external traumarelated CME in 3 years must be related to clinical pediatric trauma care 5. Attendance at a minimum of 50 of the Trauma Quality and Safety QI meetings per year. 6. Maintenance of ATLS certification every 4 years.
