Job Description

Main Responsibilities

The Policy Specialist under the supervision of the Conservation Director leads policy and advocacy processes analyzes international treaties/ commitments and national policies in the area of biodiversity formulates and supports processes to develop relevant policies and legal instruments and establishes alliances with key actors from the public and private sectors as well as civil society to advance WWFGuianass mission and objectives on biodiversity climate change and other related areas.

Major Duties

Advocacy Leadership

  • Spearheads WWFs policy advocacy efforts to achieve transformative policies aligning with WWFs mission and objectives on biodiversity climate change and other environmental issues.
  • Formulates and develops or supports partners to develop better policies and legal instruments to support conservation goals.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Establishes rapport and maintains alliances with various policy makers and stakeholders government agencies (executive legislative and judicial branches) local authorities private sector entities civil society organizations local communities indigenous groups and donors.
  • Advises national governments and regional bodies on public policy ensuring environmental and social safeguards transparency and ethics in these processes.
  • Acts as a spokesperson for WWFGuianas in various internal and external forums ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Participating in the WWF Amazon regional initiatives to contribute and learn together with colleagues from Amazon countries.

Strategic Implementation

  • Leads the development and implementation of policy advocacy strategies of national focus and commitments under international agreements and treaties on biodiversity climate change SDGs land degradation pollutants and other priorities aligning with WWF strategies.
  • Oversees WWFs policy related activities including those of other WWF programs and measures the impact of measures established partnerships and innovation strategies.

Program Planning and fundraising

  • Supports planning monitoring and evaluation processes including organizational strategic planning and project development ensuring policy advocacy efforts are informed and effective.
  • Identifies potential funding sources and develop proposals together with respective teams for the continuity and deepening of policy and advocacy efforts.

Knowledge and Fund Management

  • Contributes to knowledge management by collecting documenting protecting publishing and delivering material and generating content for communication materials.
  • Participate in WWF Amazon regional and wider network peer sharing and learnings

Training and Supervision

  • Provides training advice and support to WWFGuianas team and partners on policy direction latest developments and innovative solutions and strengthening
  • Develops terms of reference and supervises consultants and grant recipients ensuring proper of projects and compliance with required procedures.

Reporting and Compliance

  • Creates analyses reports documents and presentations on policy issues ensuring timely and quality reporting.
  • Ensures compliance with WWFs organizational policies.

Environmental and Social Safeguards

  • Ensures adherence and implementation of WWFs Environmental and Social Safeguards Framework (ESSF) and the management of risks within the overall portfolios and projects.

Other Duties

  • Perform any other tasks reasonably assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Set up a clear documentation storage system for audit purposes within respective portfolio.

 


Qualifications :

  • Minimum bachelors degree in international relations public policy economics natural resource management or a related field. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in similar roles with experience in the corporate sector being a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing complex environmental projects and conducting advocacy processes.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills with a willingness to represent and speak on behalf of the organization.
  • Strong team player and internal organizational networker.
  • Excellent relationshipbuilding skills with government business civil society and the donor community including managing donor relationships and reporting.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Dutch English Sranan Tongo and Spanish is a pre.

  • Understanding general business practices and processes how the business environment interacts with conservation programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience in building functional multidisciplinary teams counterparts and partners.

  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly including travelling outside of regular office hours.

Additional Information :

Working Relationships

Internal

The Policy Specialist will work under the supervision of the Conservation Director. And will collaborate with management technical and operation team members across Suriname and Guyana and with other Network Offices.

External

Public and private sector civil society and the donor community media.
