Position Description

Seattle Human Resources endeavors to promote an equitable and engaging work environment so employees can do their best work and make a difference for the people and communities we serve. The Department focuses on providing highquality services to all City employees and departments and works collaboratively with department leaders to align policies practices and programs citywide to fulfill the vision of workforce equity and excellence.


As part of this mission the Compensation & Classification unit administers the Citywide job classification and compensation programs for approximately 12500 regular employees and more than 1200 job classifications. This work champions internal and external equity by taking meaningful steps to ensure that similar bodies of work and levels of responsibility are paid similarly across all City departments and that all positions are compensated fairly and competitively in the market. We are looking for a Classification and Compensation Analyst to support these goals.

Job Responsibilities

The three main focus areas for this role include:

Consultant Services:

  • Supporting department HR partners as their classification and compensation subject matter expert
  • Developing trusting relationships with clients
  • Understanding and supporting operational goals
  • Facilitating the timely resolution of issues through other functional partners (Comp/Class leads HRIS Labor Relations Budget Advisors)
  • Advocating for compensation program improvements
  • Providing training and support on classification and compensation laws policies procedures tools and established practices

Position Classification:

  • Performing job evaluations to appropriately classify positions from entrylevel through senior executive positions across all City departments and offices
  • Analyzing job functions to make civil service status determinations
  • Participating in classification reconsideration processes
  • Performing site visits direct observations of work and organizational reviews to ensure accurate and equitable classification determinations

Classification Development:

  • Developing new classification titles and updating existing classification titles and specifications in accordance with changing operational needs


You will be most successful in this role with a combination of the following:

Experience in:

  • Classifying a high volume of positions within a large complex and decentralized organization
  • Job evaluation particularly using traditional classification methods and point factor job evaluation
  • Working in an organization with multiple professional fields including unionrepresented positions


The ability to:

  • Analyze a role and differentiate between nuanced details of bodies of work classification specifications and pointfactor descriptions
  • Share information and interact with clients in a way that instills confidence as a classification and compensation subject matter expert
  • Effectively balance a high volume of requests while keeping work distinct consistently managed and able to be transferred seamlessly to other team members if needed
  • Set respectful and effective boundaries communicate decisions and deescalate tensions
  • Effectively manage your time to meet competing demands including the ability to invest more or less time on requests based on expected operational benefits
  • Willingly engage in and support efforts to improve systems programs processes and services
  • Work independently as a consultant supporting a unique client group knowing when to escalate issues ask for advice and communicate risks while delivering work products as an individual contributor


Skills or Certification in:

  • Strong writing skills particularly to effectively and formally document job summaries analyses and recommendations in a clear and consistent way without impactful errors
  • Customer service demonstrating a desire to help others be available and follow through with solutions and effective results
  • Systems thinking with an ability to effectively use complex organizational systems and advise on improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness in delivery of services
  • Collaborating effectively with others readily sharing ideas and solutions and aligning with others to support the delivery of consistent and quality services across the organization
  • Understanding federal state and local compensation laws

Qualifications

In addition to the ability to perform the tasks described above you will need to possess the below required qualifications:


  • Bachelors Degree in Human Resource Management Business or Public Administration Social Sciences or a related field
  • Two years inperforming human resourcesrelated tasks classification and compensation or a related field


OR


  • Associate Degree in Human Resource Management Business or Public Administration Social Sciences or a related field
  • Three years inperforming human resourcesrelated tasks classification and compensation or a related field


OR

  • Four years inperforming human resourcesrelated tasks classification and compensation or a related field

Additional Information

This civilservice position is classified as a Personnel Analyst and reports to the Compensation Program Manager. The full pay range for this stepprogression position is $45.74 $53.27per hour. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression which is $45.74 hourly. Current City employees starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.


First round interviews for this position are tentatively scheduled for Wednesday May 14 and/or Thursday May 15 2025. Second interviews are scheduled for Wednesday May 21 2025.

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Tuesdays are an inoffice day for the team. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor and are subject to change.

Individuals selected to fill this position may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360 which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication inlanguage interpretation or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
