The Position
General Summary: The medical assistantcertified will provide clinical skills as a part of a larger healthcare team in the Clinic Services department. Under the standing orders of the health officer and direction of the delegated licensed health care practitioner the MAC will provide immunizations medication administration phlebotomy STI screening and TB skin testing in the clinic and community environment when the licensed health care practitioner is readily accessible. The MAC will also conduct health assessments and referrals as necessary for program duties.
Essential duties may include but are not limited to:
- Gathers appropriate clinical intake data including necessary vital signs and health screening data.
- Maintains documentation in the clinical record to assure the accurate tracking of patient medical care.
- Prepares administers and documents immunizations and medication for children and adults in a clinic or community setting.
- Reviews patient immunization record to ascertain which vaccinations are due.
- Educates the client or parent/guardian about the vaccination(s) being provided as well and others they may be eligible for
- Provides postvaccination and medication instructions.
- Records adverse immunization reaction on Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System
- Supports client to conduct clinical testing/screening.
- Follows the procedure for handling various specimens/cultures for analysis or laboratory delivery.
- Performs test and controls on internal testing and equipment.
- Ordering lab tests and prescriptions at the direction of the health officer.
- Maintains clinic room supplies inventory and replenish supplies as needed.
- Administer PPD skin tests interpret patients response and record information appropriately.
- Draws blood for various tests as needed and ordered.
- Refer client for appropriate clinical and community supports.
- Attend educational and staff development events deemed necessary by program requirements.
- May be required to perform and document Medicaid Administrative Match activities per the Medicaid Administrative Match Training Manual for LHJs.
- Respond to public health emergency drills/exercises or actual events as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and understanding of the child and adult immunization schedules.
- Competently administer oral intramuscular intradermal and subcutaneous vaccines and medications.
- Knowledge of basic pharmacology.
- Ability to give injections to infants children and adolescents as well as adults.
- Able to present ideas and give instructions with good oral communication skills both in person and over the telephone.
- Ability to learn about new vaccines schedules and diseases.
- Basic knowledge of communicable diseases
- Ability to speak and write Spanish OR the ability to communicate effectively through an interpreter.
- Ability to keep organized and accurate records.
- Ability to learn and utilize specialized software programs.
The Requirements & Selection Process
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Prefer two years experience in a clinical environment. Applicants must have a valid WA State Medical AssistantCertified credential and submit proof of completion of one of the following medical assistant training programs:
- Completion of a medical assistant program offered by a school accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP); or
- Completion of a medical assistant program offered by a school accredited by a regional or national accrediting organization recognized by the US Department of Education which includes a minimum of 720 clock hours of training in medical assisting skills including an externship of no less than 160 hours; or
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship program administered by a department of the state of Washington unless the secretary determines that the apprenticeship program training or experience is not substantially equivalent to the standards of this state. The apprenticeship program shall ensure a participant who successfully completes the program is eligible to take one or more examinations identified in WAC.
