Do you love making sure things are built correctlyAs a Construction Highway Technician Senior you will spend your day making roads safer through sampling testing and inspecting construction projects yearround. You will contribute your knowledge and skills towards the Iowa Department of TransportationsMission of Making Lives Better Through Transportation and our five CORE values: Safety First People Matter Customer Focused Servant Leadership and Integrity Without Exception.
While a CDL permit is required upon hire you must have Class A and endorsements / restrictions on your CDL within 5 months following your hire date.CDL Training for Iowa Department of Transportation employees is provided! Entry Level Driver Training is available if you do not already possess Class A and endorsements / restrictions on your CDL for positions that require it.Those eligible will receive both handson BehindtheWheel Range and Road training with webbased Theory training to fulfill required state and federal regulations.
Location:Grimes Resident Construction Engineer Office 2300 SE 17th St Grimes IA 50111
Shift:7:00 AM to 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and are subject to be on call 24 hours a day during emergency and / or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required. Night work will be required depending on construction project workload.
While being a part of a dedicated team some of your independent responsibilities will include:
completing inspection on highway construction projects
maintaining detailed records of all project activities such as vouchers asbuilts and progress reports
acting as the liaison with Iowa DOT staff government officials contractors and the public
performing mathematical calculations to ensure compliance with project plans percent complete quantity used and areas measured
ensuring that work is completed according to the plans specifications and contract documents
performing basic office administration via technical devices and software
overseeing teammates assigned to specific projects
completing routine maintenance and service of DOT equipment and vehicles
operating snow and ice removal equipment
This position requires a high volume of computer and software use. To be successful in this position you will need high proficiency with typing and digital data entry.
Requirements:
May be required to obtaintesting material certification specialized equipment training or other certifications as needed for construction inspection

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1 Graduation from high school GED or equivalency and experience equal to four years of fulltime work in highway maintenance equipment operation construction inspection field work in engineering survey or materials inspection and testing.
2 A total of four years of education and/or fulltime experience (as described in number one) where thirty semester hours of posthighschool education in highway maintenance equipment operation construction inspection field work in engineering survey or materials inspection and testing equals one year of fulltime experience.
3 Current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of fulltime work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.
4 Current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes twentyfour months of fulltime work as a Highway Technician Associate.

- Positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learners Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority a valid Commercial Drivers License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained to continue employment.
- In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382 this job requires a preemployment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employers random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
- Prior to starting employment all persons are required to have a post offer preemployment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.
- Within a period of time after hire as determined by the appointing authority employees in this class may be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
- Positions require certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa Department of Transportations Technical Training and Certification Program for Highway Materials and Construction; and/or other certifications as required.
- Within a period of time after hire as determined by the appointing authority employees in this class may be required to attend a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
- Travel including overnight travel may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
- Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority employees in designated positions are required to reside within a defined driving time during normal conditions from the assigned work location.
- Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.
- Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
