Brief Description of Duties

The University of the District of Columbia College of Arts and Sciences Division of Education Health and Social Work invites applications for a fulltime ninemonth tenuretrack faculty appointment in Counseling with a target start date of January 2025.

The University of the District of Columbia is a public comprehensive university with an urban landgrant distinction. It is the District of Columbias only public institution of higher education. It has historically been a minority serving institution. The University services approximately 5000 students across its twoyear baccalaureate masters and professional programs. The Washington metropolitan community provides an exceptional learning laboratory for faculty staff and students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Teach courses at the graduate level in the Counselor program with emphasis in school but also mental health counseling classes.
  • Teach graduate courses face to face (with opportunities for hybrid or online instruction).
  • Other duties include serving on division program college and/or university committees working collaboratively with program faculty and area partners performing service administrative and CACREP accreditationrelated Tasks as necessary to enhance the quality of the program and performing tasks related to the development of excellence in counselor preparation at UDC.

The successful candidate will be able to foster an environment of professionalism and collaboration and work toward continuous improvement as part of a team.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in Counselor Education & Supervision or comparable doctoral degree in the field of Counseling and hold a license or be eligible for licensure as a LPC in Washington DC Maryland or Virginia.
  • Knowledge of state and district rules/regulations and policies pertaining to counseling
  • A demonstrated record of membership and participation in relevant professional organizations
  • Hold certification or licensure pertinent to the profession
  • Established collegial relationships with School Mental Health agencies and/or Schools/educational facilities in the surrounding area. Licensed or Licensed eligible or willingness to achieve eligibility within a reasonable period in the VA/MD/DC metropolitan area and/or
  • A minimum of five successful years of experience in counseling (i.e. School Mental Health)
  • A minimum of one year of teaching in an institution of higher learning(includes TA; Graduate Assistantship)
  • Knowledge of best practices and skills associated with teaching and counselor preparation
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Ability to engage with diverse groups and show sensitivity to variations across age gender socioeconomic status ethnicity language cultural national origin and prior training and educational experience
A candidate for appointment to the rank ofAssistant Professorshall be required to meet the following qualifications:
  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three 3 years of fulltime teaching experience including two 2 years in an institution of higher education.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

A candidate for appointment to the rank ofAssociate Professorshall be required to meet the followingqualifications:
  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five 5 years of fulltime teaching experience in an institution of higher education including three 3 years as an Assistant Professor.

Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Residency Preference:
A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position may be awarded a 10point residency preference over nonDistrict applicants unless the person declines the preference points. If selected the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
