The Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2 VPC Dataplane team owns the packet pipeline that runs right beneath all our customers EC2 VPC instances adding features like firewalls (security groups) routing billing and monitoring as we touch every single packet on every single host across our worldwide fleet in more than 30 regions. Our vision is to combine the performance of bare metal networking while maintaining all the benefits of the cloud including delivering features not possible on bare metal leading to true Software Defined Networking (SDN).

We continue to grow and are looking for a SW Engineer to help build our next generation of automation. In this role you will build and improve the endtoend EC2 SDN feature development validation and release cycle through tooling and automation. This will require a thorough understanding of AWS networking components backend software development using a variety of AWS services as well as interest in systems software engineering such as kernel or embedded software development. This is a unique opportunity to join us in building the platform which is the basis for all new EC2 VPC features in the years to come.

You will also have the opportunity to impact and influence a wide range of teams across EC2 by developing frameworks used in validation of endcustomer workloads on both production and preproduction environments.

Key job responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:

Being an engineer on a small team mentoring junior engineers ensuring the right development practices are followed.
Being very handson; working with an engineering team to manage the daytoday development activities by leading architecture decisions participating in design reviews code reviews and implementation.
Maintaining current technical knowledge to support a rapidly changing technology stack always being on the look out for new technologies and working with management and development teams in exploring new technologies.
Communicating with users other technical teams and senior management to collect requirements describe software product features technical designs and product strategy.

3 years of noninternship professional software development experience
2 years of noninternship design or architecture (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
Experience programming with at least one software programming language

3 years of full software development life cycle including coding standards code reviews source control management build processes testing and operations experience
Bachelors degree in computer science or equivalent
Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle including coding standards software architectures code reviews source control management continuous deployments testing and operational excellence
Experience in building novel solutions/framework to test our software in a controlled environment
Scripting (Ruby/Python/Shell)
Knowledge of at least one modern programming language such as C C Rust Python or Golang
Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project
Experiencing mentoring junior software development engineers and driving engineering excellence

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on jobrelated knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
